I've always put my pedals in line before the amp input but the Super-Sonic 22 I got yesterday has that handy footswitch to punch FX in/out. Seems to me that using the send/return just adds another 10 or 15 feet of cord and all my pedals are true bypass anyway. Yes, I will be experimenting but I'm open to opinions.

From years of experimenting with and without the effects loop I've found that the effects loop sucks out a good part of your tone so I never use it on any amp.I haven't found an amp yet that has an effects loop that doesn't have a negative impact on the tone.

On my 84 Concert amp I use it sort of...I use a short cord and plug from the send to the return on the effects loop and then set the send to half way and the return the same, because it activates a extra gain stage. I like the tone that way and don't notice any drop in volume or anything else, just more gain.

Then I just plug my effects into the input on the front of the amp as usual.

FWIW

I think that amps like the Concert and similar amps, may be the exceptions to the typical tone robbing effect of most loops. The Concert has tube driven and recovered effects loop with adjustable levels and the ability to change the gain by changing the tubes, as opposed to the solid state fixed gain buffer circuits used in many other amp's loops.

OK, but more specifically, switching out the FX (as on the S-S 22) does eliminate the loop entirely and the circuit "looks" directly to the front panel input as if nothing is connected to the send/return jacks. Correct? In other words, any potential coloring or degradation of the signal applies only when the foot switch is "on"? I just kinda question whether the above situations really apply to my case. My aim here is to use effects but shorten cable runs and simplify the switching that is directly in front of me. Thanks for the input so far.

Switching the FX loop off in the SS22 does bypass the loops return circuit leaving the pedals and loop circuit still connected to the signal in the amp , which is very nearly the same as if nothing was plugged into the loop. There are probably people that could hear a difference though. You could try it yourself and see if you hear any difference.

I use the loop on my HRD for the "modulators", all distortions are in the front. as far as "tone sucking" I dont get it... YMMV

Sorry gues that was a bit off topic in answering your question, but I would agree that anything that makes it simpler is often better...hence the not using the effects loop for anything other than a gain boost.

i only use the efx loop if i absoultley have to use the drive on the amp with the delay... but i have a range of drive pedals for that so no i hardly ever use the efx loop anymore... i found on by BDRI (using a pedal board containing +- 18 pedals) i lost about 10% of my clean volume and a whole lot on trebble and general depth of sound...

plus just using 2 cables beats using the normal 5...
