While I'm not a fan of dragging around large amps anymore, I have a chance to trade a Classic 50's Strat (MIM) for a Music Man 410-65. Actually I wouldn't be gigging with it but I'm kind of intrigued by it. I think it was built in the early 80's and is similar in appearance to a Super Reverb. I have no experience with Music Man amps and know very little about them. I have heard that they are hybrid in design. Any thoughts on these amps.

They're a bit cleaner than a SR would be and somewhat louder at max volume as well. But, like most things Leo built, they're as solid as a tank and reliable performers. I think your trade was equitable.

L88 Vette, Are you a Vette owner too :?:

They sound really good cranked all the way up w/ a humbucker equipped guitar :!:

They are a hybrid amps transister pre amp and tube power amp. I like them... A friend had a 410 65W one and it was a great sounding amp. Had a nice grit to it. If I could find a good 112 65W I would buy it for sure...in fact the guy I got my SFSR also had a 112 65W and I offered but he said that was one of his keepers...although not sure why the super wasn't as it is a super amp...yep pun intended :!:

They are vey loud and clean, if you use alot of effects and play big venues it's a great amp. Wikipedia has some good info on the compay and history of the MM amps.

I had a Music Man 65 112 and gave it to my son. I wish I still had it. It's a great sounding, seriously reliable hybrid amp.

Back in the day I had a Music Man 112-RD50. Built like a tank; I sold it off when I took a "sabbatical" from playing in the late 80s (okay, I quite from 1986-1992 but kept one guitar, my '79 Fender Lead II). The clean channel was really clean; the RD50 had a bit of a different circuit with a single preamp tube for the gain channel. It seems like the other ones (with solid state preamps for both channels) took pedals really well on both channels. In fact, for anything but kind of fizzy early 80s metal my old one sounded better with an overdrive pedal on the clean channel.

One thing I should point out - Leo Fender didn't have much to do with the Music Man amps; he might have critiqued them but he wasn't involved in the design. Although he was one of 3 owners of the company he only designed and built the guitars and basses (which was actually through his other company called CLF Research; after he left Music Man Leo converted CLF Research to his third and final company, G&L Guitars).
