The subject line pretty much says it all. I can go to my local shop and take the Pro Tube version of the Twin for a test drive, I cannot do so with the "Evil" Twin from '87-'94. Can anyone compare these two amps for me? Are there any real tonal/sonic differences or is the Pro Tube version merely a new name slapped onto the same amp (aside from the lack of tremolo, of course)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I owned the evil twin (80lbs, 100 watt, 2x12, Red knobs) for exactly 1 week. I have never played the new Pro Tube Twin (Blackface)

I'm not a tone god but I have played for a long time and I know what I like. The evil twin was impossible to drive without monster volume levels and always sounded empty. The amp also produced a lot of hum.
The amp did produce those classic Fender clean tones but it was never sounded quite like I was expecting. If you want an amazing sounding amp give the Twin Reverb Reissue a spin...

I'm definitely needing something that has a good distortion channel on it, so I'm thinking the Twin Reverb isn't really the way to go for me. I don't want to have to use boost pedals and the like. I just want guitar->amp, and unless I have a good mid to high gain channel, I can't do that with the styles of music that I play.

A Twin is like an audition in front of Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy and Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. You're naked. It's so hard and clean and unforgiving that the slightest screwup on your part is a disaster. It's deadly. You have nothing to hide behind. If you don't have GREAT CHOPS, you'll look like a complete buffoon playing it. Twins are for masters.
