Hello,
I was wondering if anyone here could help me with this conundrum. I originally purchased an Egnater Rebel 30 combo a month ago. I returned it because of a loud hum I was getting on channel 1 and plus I wasn’t that crazy about channel 1 to begin with. I exchanged it for a Fender Supersonic 22 combo because my first tube amp was a Hot Rod DeVille 212 and wanted that Fender clean with a better OD than the HRD 212 in a smaller package. I prefer the clean & reverb on the Supersonic more than the Rebel 30 but there is still a consistent noise on both channels and the reverb has the loudest noise. I'm starting to think it's my house.

The amp is currently sitting in a room where there is a computer, modem / router, cable box, flat screen TV. I have plugged the amp into other outlets around the house and still the same noise. I brought it into my office and still the same noise. Is my amp picking up the hum from all the TVs, PCs, light / dimmer switches, central air and electrical appliances running in the household? I noticed sometimes there is a slight weird swirling noise in the reverb when the computer is on but it’s gone when the computer is off. How can I isolate the amp from all of this? I currently have the amp plugged into a surge protector -> Ebtech Hum X hum filter -> outlet. I’ve tried other outlets in the house and still pick up noise. Both amps I used were brand new right of the box.

I brought my amp back to the store where I bought it to do a comparison with a floor model. They sounded the same and neither amp was making the noise I heard at home. There was some noise but not as loud like at home. I’ve read and heard that the Supersonic 22 is generally a noisy amp. I got the EHX Hum Debugger last night and I connected my guitar --> pedal --> amp as instructed. There was no change. I tried putting the Hum Debugger after my EHX Memory Man Deluxe in the effect loop and it was able to remove 60 cycle hum entirely on the “Strong” setting but there was still some noise, especially in the reverb past 5.

I'm past the point of futzing with it some more so I'm just going to learn to live with it. I really like the amp and the 30 day return policy has expired. It's only irritating when I stop playing. I need to start playing more and stop obsessing over gear. I don't have a room in my home where there isn't an electrical device or appliance running. I spoke to an amp repair guy in San Diego who said he might be able to do something so I might give that a shot somewhere down the line. I'm also going to talk to an electrician to hear what he has to say.

I was hoping someone could suggest what I could do to decrease the noise from my amp or the room.

Tell me what kind of noise you are talking about ? (hum 60-120Hz, white noise, cracks ...)
Does it noise with you guitar unplugged ?
Have you got single or hum-buck-er pick-ups on you guitar ?
:)

I'm not sure how to articulate or describe the noise. The hum debugger seem to remove the hum so I going to say it's white noise.

There is noise when the guitar is not plugged in.

There is noise when I use my tele & SG.

Hi carlo3874,

Since you didn't have the same noise in the store, you might have bad grounding in your house or noise on the lines in your house. Are all of the outlets three-prong AND properly grounded? I would suspect grounding first, noisy lines second. If it is noise, the noise could come from inside or outside your house. You can have interference from just about anywhere, including CRTs, radio stations or radar towers nearby, or even the appliances in your house. Any noise generated by one appliance on one outlet, can cause noise on any other outlet in the house. You might try to unplug all of the computers, modems etc, (EVERYTHING) and see if the noise gets any better. If so, maybe a power conditioner for your amp to plug into would help. But, I would get an outlet tester and make sure that your outlets are wired properly and grounded first.

I understand, this simple figure can help you:
White noise is "sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
Hum is "Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn"

Hum is usually caused by bad supply cap or gounding loop or fluo light interferences.

White noise can be caused by a valve (that was the case on my BDRI)

Let first make Shimmilou's tests and continue to discuss after.

Hi Carlo, here's a trick I used in the past to spot undesired electro magnetic interference. Take a batteries powered am radio, synthonize it between two stations and crank the volume up. Then walk around in your house, more in the area where you put your music gear. You will catch every single emi source, even from appliances that we usually don't suspect. Then you'll have a better knowledge of where you can put your stuff. Good luck.

+1

And definitely cheaper than a Hewlett-Packard 2566 spectrum analyzer!

yeah Carlo, mine has it too.
i do not notice it with a band setting but I do if i try to record with it/
so it doesn't bother me
for what it's worth, i have played around with some of the preamp tubes:

V1 - tried the following 12ax7:
tungsol ( great sound - kept it in v1
mullard ( great clean tone but didn' t care for it when i engaged the mid boost and pushed into breakup )
electro harmonix - sounded great in v1
12ax7 LPS ( good but kinda brite )
JJ - 3 rd choice for this slot
V2 - all the above plus i treied the original groove tube that came in v1 ( 12ax7-R which is a lil more bite than the gt 12ax7-C & I liked it here. I may try a chinese dragon soon

V4: all the above and settled on the electro harmonix here

V6 & V7 had groove tube 6V6 "7"
pulled those and tried groove tube 6V6 "5" and they sounded better
then tried JJ
then electro harmonix -
liked JJ's 6V6 sounded the best here for me

~ ANYWAYS, white noise or hiss was always there during tube tryouts
I did NOT yet toy with the 12AT7's.
But I have a feeling it is something in the amp's circuitry that is doing this
- cause when i Biased the power tubes each time there was a buzzing sound coming from the side of the board where the power cord goes in. Doesn't change at all when i was adjusting the bias wheel.
if that helps

and about the "buzzing" -
Noticed it first when i removed the chassis from the cab to bias the 6V6's
~ i guess the sound is hidden when the chassis is in the cabinet.
UNLESS whatever is making that buzz is the culprit of the hiss

The "buzzing" you mention may in fact be loose windings within the power transformer. Thus, it would be perceived as louder with the chassis removed from the cab. No fix for it other than replacing the P/T. And there'd be no guarantee that the new one wouldn't buzz either.

Hi,
I'm new here but saw your problem and was wondering if you play with single coil pickups? Single coils have a nasty habit of being extremely noisy especially when you are near the amp as you might be while sitting at home. I was working with single coils when I was practicing over at our rhythm man's basement and we couldn't stop the noise. I even went and bought a Monster 3500 power center after seeing it demonstrated in the store and it still didn't take care of all the hum. As soon as I went to noiseless pickups, AND copper shielded the cavities underneath the pickguard, It finally went away. We have since moved to the drummer's basement and I'm back to playing single coils on an American Std Tele and have very little hum if any out of my HRD. You might try shielding your guitar or installing noiseless pickups. You mentioned that it didn't have near the noise when you brought it back to the store where you bought it from. It's possible that your home is like the one where I used to practice. The only way you're going to get relief from the hum is to shield your guitar and install some noiseless picups or go with Humbuckers. If you already have humbuckers on your guitar, then I wouldn't know what else to do.

The electrician took look at my home and told me the outlets are all grounded. He couldn't offer any reasons why the amp was making noise because he wasn't familiar with guitars or amps. The guitars I'm using are a MIA Tele Standard with Seymour Duncan pickups (not noiseless), Gibson SG (humbuckers) and a Carvin Holdsworth Fatboy (humbuckers). The white noise is there on all guitars and with nothing plugged in. I'm going to try the AM radio trick. If I can't figure it out on my own, I will take it in to the repair shop to have it checked out.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Fender has a great 5 year warranty. The best in the bidness. Better than any LCD TV or computer.

I'd sure prefer a great amp over a great warranty.

My last new Fender was a '78 Twin Reverb, with a one-year term. In 2001 it finally required some servicing (tubes, biasing, caps).
