The BD is great amp. You can't believe the low end it has. And that mid-range grind not only packs a punch, but it sounds awesome. Phat as holy hel!.

I just did a full volume comparison (I'm now deaf!) The contenders were the Super Champ XD (15 tube watts), a Line 6 Spider III 75 (75 solid state watts), and a Twin Reverb 15 (85 tube watts).

Naturally, the Twin blew the walls out! But the Super Champ was louder than the Spider. I was using clean settings on all amps. Still, I can see where playing in a band would swamp the Super Champ. You really need a tube amp in the 40 watt range to do the job.

I just bought a new Frontman 212R last Thanksgiving, and I really like it; but it's too bulky and too heavy to use at rehearsals.

I WAS using a Roland Cube 30, which was the prefect size and volume; but I sold it after buying the SCXD. I thought the SCXD was my answer. Was I ever wriongh on THAT one!

Yeah, whenever I brought my BD into a gig, I knew it would always handle the job. At blues jams, it was a common amp to see brought in as well. So it takes one to jam with one. Those 15-watt amps are great, but can you really get any headroom with your neck pickup with em in a band context without mushing out early? I find myself just diming em w/the bridge pickup. Good sound but very limited.

I find miking my amp a huge hassle in small venues: more wires, the mic stand, somebody's always kicking the mic, more crap to deal with in your PA, level concerns, etc. I always prefer to just come in and play out of my amp. Simple is better. Once you've got a good FOH mixer in a larger club it all makes sense. But for small to mid-sized bars, plug n play is where it's at.

This thread has caused me to join up. Thanks all for the motivation. I am a serious player and play with other serious players (usually blues) and a Hot Rod Deluxe (one of which is mine) or 2 or 3 is always present. Never a Blues Deluxe.

I say this not to discount the BD, but to encourage you to consider the Hot Rod Deluxe. It really isn't much heavier than a DRRI, has three channels if you don't want to get overly loud, and takes to pedals like nobody's business AND the price is in your range. I have one of the first ever built and have never had a problem at all with it. Neither have others I know that have them.

All that said, if you are willing to step out of the Fender line, A Peavey Classic 30 will be next to impossible to beat.

I have other amps and use them for lower powered situations, i.e. PJ's (I love em) and still others for home.

I just felt, based on your criteria, I would jump in with my thoughts.

Let us know what you decide!! :)
