Just bought a new Blues Jr nos from musiciansfriend.com and I have noticed that the knobs seem very stiff when adjusting. I had an older blues jr and never noticed this before. Is anyone else having this same experience? Is this something I should worry about?

Hi kkennally,

Nothing to worry about. In fact, it may be a good thing. If your amp has the older style push-on knobs, the underneath part of each knob has an extension that fits the chassis hole to prevent the pot shaft from moving side-to-side, and also to prevent downward pressure on the knob from pushing on the pot. The pots are mounted to the circuit board and have plastic shafts sticking through the chassis holes, so if the knobs weren't pushed on tightly, any pressure on the knob would be transferred to the pots which could cause the solder joints to crack on the circuit board, or damage the pot. When installed correctly, the knobs take all of the stress and don't transfer it to the pots.

The knobs will loosen up after a bit of use, but you want them to be tight to protect the pots. They are usually on very tight and are difficult to remove. If you ever want/have to remove the knobs, make sure to support the pots inside with something like a small block of wood between the pots and chassis to hold the pots in place and prevent damage. Same when replacing the knobs, support the pot underneath while pushing the knob on to prevent the pot from moving and breaking the solder joints.

I removed mine for amp mods, and I thought for sure that I would do some damage trying to get them off. I just used a small piece of wood to prevent the pot from moving upward as I pulled the knobs off. For reinstalling, I used one hand to push up on the bottom of the pots, while I pushed the knobs on with the other hand until they were firmly seated. It worked out fine, no damage. :)

Thanks for the info. The amp sounds great and I was hoping it was something normal like that.
Thanks again.

Don't know about anyone else, but talk of stiff knobs will not be tolerated.
