Okay...so after careful consideration I've decided on the tubes for my DRRI that I got on trade for the purpose of modding extisively. Sorry for the misspellings. It took four tries to get "misspellings" right. Anyway, I've pretty much decided that for now, I'm going new production for the 12AXS's, but for the V2 tube, I want a 5751.

Does new production really affect sound that much? Or is NOS the OMG HOLY GRAIL tone?

Please offer your thoughts and differs opinions.

Many "new" tubes sound just as nice as vintage NOS. However, none of them are likely to last as long as the bottles built in the US, Great Britain, Germany, etc, especially the mil-spec stuff.

ah, I understand.

That helps a lot actually, when deciding which tubes will go where.

+1 Retroverbial,

Just be sure to get your tubes from a reputable place that tests them and offers a guarantee.

And, when a word is misspelled, it will have a squiggly line under it. Just double click the word to highlight it, then right click on the highlighted word for spelling suggestions. :)

I have had excellent results with all of the Tung-Sol reissue stuff, that being said, I still use a 5751 in v-1 on most amps that call for a 12AX7, just keeps it in the sweet spot a little longer before going over the top fuzzy.

Hopefully they will reissue a 5751 with all of the originals characteristics.

The Tung-Sol 6V6gt Reissues are awesome by the way !!!
The 12AX7 T/S RI is excellent also.

Maybe we will some day get a real good 12AY7 RI too

If you like a more "5751" like tone, the Reissued Mullard 12AX7 are pretty close. Not the gain "feel" as the Tungsol RI. More midrange oriented. Kinda like the original Mullards ECC83 (kinda...).

One note, they are long plates. Like Sovtek 12AXLPS. Buy them from someone that tests for noise as well as strength.

I've only recently again started trying new production tubes, and the Mullard and Tung-Sol reissues have surprised me as sounding great.....and they're a helluva lot cheaper.
After seeing how much some of the NOS tubes I own are worth,I thought I would keep most of them put back, only using selected ones in a couple of my amps.
I'm just glad the new tubes sound as good as they do,the quality has improved over the years since I tried some and rejected them many years ago.

So far I have used tung-sol Reissue
12AX7
6V6GT
5881

and they were all excellent and I have yet to have any failure.
I have heard a few complaints very early on with microphonic 12AX7's, no recent complaints that I have seen any way.

If the trend continues NOS won't be as important, unless like me You still believe in Made in The USA.

Really it depends on the tube. I just popped in a set of TAD 6l6's into an amp and the sound like vintage tubes.

After hearing the NOS RCA 6V6 nothing else works for me... haven't tried NOS in preamp yet, but I tried a few different new tubes (T-S, JJ, Sovtek...) and settled on TAD 7025S in V2, very happy with the results. JAN Philips 5751 if I want less gain.

Yep cedarblues,I have enough matched pairs of RCA 6V6s to keep me going for many years to come,at least 8 pairs are blackplates....I'm addicted to the sound, but they ain't making 'em anymore. It's hard to accept ain't it?
For years I've been hoping a new production tube would come along to get close,by trying a few different brands I might find something to substitute just to keep from wearing out all the NOS ones.

I liked the Tung-Sol RI 6V6, but those RCAs, WOW!

I recently got to play through a '66 DR, it was the best tone I EVER heard! I was very surprised to see it had some EH 6V6. My DRRI came with GT labelled EH, didn't do it for me, but I might still try a pair of EH 6V6 one of these days...

I had a pair of Motorolla 6V6gt's that sounded absolutely amazing, I let them go with an amp, been sorry since that day.

I tried some EH 6V6's and wel, I was not impressed

If I have to use new stuff its going to be the Tung-Sol so far so good.

Years ago I had a '68 Princeton Reverb with Motorola 6V6's and a Telefunken GZ34 -- best tube combination I ever heard in that particular amp. I should've "harvested" them before trading it off......oh well.
