Telstar 64 hear from Northern California. I've been considering buying a used Cyber Twin, from a private party. My question is, that the amplifier seems to be quite complex and I would know if there is any expensive problems lurking in it. Is there any main problems or defects to look out for when buying a used cyber twin. This would not be a newer model such as the SE. I am not much of a tech person and I've owned mostly tube Fender amplifiers. So with the complex of the cyber twin and the learning curve I will not be able to probably figure out if there's something wrong with the amplifier just playing it at the sellers house. All suggestions are welcome. Thank you. :?:

check list:
1. the big data wheel should be smooth, display window should not jitter as you rotate the big data knob to check out the presets.
2. select presets at random, all motorized knobs should move.
3. plug in guitar and play with trim knob. the sensitiivity should swing from red to nothing, set to light up some greens.
4. select a twin based preset (A14), you should hear good tone - this checks out guitar to tube preamp to speakers
5. select a ss based preset (A25), you should hear good tone - this checks out guitar to ss preamp to speakers
6. set to A14, hand rotate every knob, you should hear the diff
7. set to A25, hand rotate every knob, you should hear the diff
8. depending on your skill level, try out all the other buttons, they should work.
9. after 15 min to 1/2 hour, check heat, that is no overheat and sound ok.
10. the bump test: bump or tap the amp while playing, you shouldn't hear a "bump" on A25, you might on A14 due to tube microphonics, but nothing dramatic.

but before you get going, visit http://www.generalcybersystems.com/GCSWebSite/index.php
and get a copy of the Cyber Commander manual - it'll explain the CT better than most other "manuals" (even though it is really a Cyber Commander software manual.

ciao,
johnny.

To Mr. Johnny.thank you very much for the tips and what to look for when buying a used Cyber Twin. It is very much appreciated. And I can download the manual for the cyber twin to take with me when I'm looking at a use amp. But because this amplifier sounds so complexed at least for me, I would probably have to hire you and pay your plane fare round-trip to San Francisco and pay for your time to go see this use cyber twin. But it might be cheaper to just buy a new one with a warranty because I figure it would take me a long time to learn all the jargon that goes along with this amplifier. But once again I appreciate your suggestions. Telstar.

Haven't been to SF in about a year, but if i swing by, will drop you a note.

if it makes sense for you, the software makes getting at all the controls very easy.

the one thing i do have to caution you about is the CT/SEs are not instant tone machines, it'll take you a while to figure out the CT/SE and then dial in what you want. At first, you'll be overwhelmed by the choices, then as you get to know the amp, you'll begin to appreciate the fine control you have. The more time you spend learning about it, the more you'll get out it. the other thing i can say is that once you get the hang of the SE, i doubt you'll want anything else. that's what happened to me. finally, the CT/SE do have their own unique tones. It would be a bit of a mistake to expect the CT/SE to 100% emulate some other amp, it won't, but, it has its own beauty (that you'll have to discover).

good luck & best wishes,
johnny.
