Hey everyone,

I have an American Fender Hot Rod Deville 4x10, and when I try to play it, the amplifier is not even close to as loud as it should be. It sounds about as loud as a 5W practice amp at half volume.

None of the tubes are burnt out, and I recently played it at my apartment and it was just as loud as it should be. But when I try to play it at a friends' house (where I can actually play it as loud as I want to), it will barely put out any volume.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

You sure your friend paid his utility bills?

Seriously, is it loud when you get it back home?

Hi nadnerb,

The output tubes would be the first suspect, maybe a preamp tube, even if they still glow. Try a new set of tubes if possible. If the tubes aren't the problem, the next step would be to open the amp and check inside, being aware of the lethal voltages.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

Could be a lot of things. Output tubes, OT or bad solder joints on the power tube sockets just to name a few.

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it. The only thing that confuses me is that it worked just fine when I played it in my apartment a few weeks ago and it worked just fine.

Luckily, I have a BSEE so I won't have any problems dealing with high voltages or replacing parts if need be. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a problem with the amplifier itself before I started opening the thing up.

Thanks again!
