While I don't have a 22 I do have the older 60W 112 combo. I biased the tubes on mine and it made a big difference. Now it's almost completely silent when idling and the reverb buzz has definitely gone down.

Same here. I bias my amps by ear, which simply consists of turning the bias pot until there is sudden drop in hiss. This is how biasing was described in Fender manual from the 70's and 80's. It is not a biasing method I would suggest unless you have the experience. Biasing by ear is for experts IMHO even if it was described in Fender manuals.

With my 2006 60W super-sonic, I simply put it on the Vibrolux channel, turned up vintage volume to 6, plugged in my guitar and biased it this way. Tube life has been okay since I made my power tube change in 2007...however there is a danger to bias too hot when you do this, maybe I got lucky.

I would still rather try to get in the ballpark by using a biasprobe and then fine-tune the sound by ear...just to be on the save side. But, if you have enough experience and are fearless, why not do it like this... :)

Just an update from my previous post last month. I decided to keep the SS22, Amazon told me I would have to pay for shipping with insurance back to them. From where I live in Japan that's almost 175 bucks (and be subject to a restocking fee).

Anyways, I actually got rid of about 85% of the noise from the amp, looks like I was having some grounding issues. I only mention this for anyone else who said the noise was unbearable to make sure their ground was solid. Now, I really enjoy the amp, it sounds great (as long as I keep the reverb under 3).

So this might be a dumb question, but how do you bias tubes???

EDIT: Almost forgot! I had a Peavey guitar cable and when I plugged it in after my pedal board, it produced a noticeable hum. But it doesn't make any hum when I plug it in before the pedal board. Anyone know what could cause this? :?

I'm not exactly sure, but I assume you have a noise gate pedal like the NS-2? I've also seen really great reviews on HumX

Mike~

set volt meter to DC mV
make sure speaker load is plugged in !!! (and reverb to)

TP40(D35) and TP41(D36) should be 16-24 mV
I set mine on the warmer side at 24.

plate voltage, TP43(D38) should be somewhere around 412-418 VDC.
415 on the schem. / mine was at 413.

bias adjust. wheel is blue / remember COUNTER-clockwise is hotter, but u will see that...use a screwdriver

DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING - it is possible you may DIE if you get shocked and all varibles wrong -
(prob not, just ZAPPED and some smoke, but people should be aware of the RISK)

Okay, thanks for the info. That seems simple but complicated! haha, I think I'll hold off for now!

WOW, I'm amazed. I bought this amp this past weekend - after trying it out first at home. I have to say - in my humble opinion, this is the best production amp available today.

We tried this amp through my Gretsch, my friend's Gretsch, his 2 X 12 closed backed cab with V30's. We both fell in love with this thing. He likes it even more than his Vibrolux.

The vocabulary and articulation this amp can achieve is stellar! I'm so happy I purchased this thing. I can't believe they can squeeze that much tone out of 22 watts. At times it even sounds like a British classic rock amp, more Marshall than even some Marshall amps.

I'm sorry for the few people that have had hum, popping or noise issues. I fortunately did not with this amp. It's dead quiet, no hiss, no hum, and my god... what a tone machine — all in a package of a small/medium suitcase.

Why hasn't Marshall gotten on board with a lower wattage 6V6 design? It's the most obvious path to what most home and studio players want, and even basement hackers like me.

Now, for those of you who did have issues with noise, hum, popping.. Were these things noticeable from the get go? Or did they develop over time?

There is a 5 year warranty on the amp, so IF something happens, (I sure hope not) at least it's covered.

Yes, the hum in the reverb and the high hiss level were there from the start, and are - according to an offical Fender statment - "normal" for such a "high gain" amp:

"1. As you already know, this is a high gain amp, it’s not going to be clean and quiet like a 65 Dlx.

2. This amp was not designed to be played at low volumes although you can use it in a low volume setting, the results will be mixed.

3. It’s a tube amp and noise is going to be there regardless and though some noise amp might not be as prominent in other amps, this is normal."

I still don't get it. There are supposed to be "dead quiet" SS22s out there? This is totally contradictory to above statements. :?

And then, how can it be that, even after my amp was at a Fender Service Point and they performed a "fix", that changed nothing about the loud hiss in the clean channel? (The hum in the reverb chain was reduced, but so was the lush sound and length of the reverb.)

Fortunately I have found my "dream" amp with a 66 BFDR, I had a chance to compare those two before I sent back the SS22, and believe me, there is a big difference in the quality of the clean channel and reverb. 8)

Reverend, it's funny, I've found "my amp" too - although I'm a basement hack. I'm just so surprised that Marshall, Orange, and whoever else, hasn't produced a 6V6 based amp that will do what the Supersonic can do. I almost feel guilty saying it, but this particular amp is quiet, I mean DEAD quiet.

At some settings - on the burn channel, it almost sounds like EL34's, and more "Marshall" than even some Marshall amps. Case in point, and my ear heard this before I found the article from:http://music-electronics-forum.com/t13507/

Chuck H
, goes on to say, "I for one think that 6V6's when overdriven sound more "Plexi" than EL84's which have a different distortion character. The popular misconceptions that a 6V6 is just a mini 6L6 or that the EL84 is a mini EL34 simply aren't true."

I find this to be very true. You'd think Marshall, of all the amp companies would have realized this, and incorporated it into a design using 6V6's and 1 or 2 GAIN stages. 65 Amps and Fender have figured it out. Yet Marshall, has only the Class 5, and the 2061X - a fantastic sounding amp, but costs at least 1800.00, VS the Supersonic, which I only paid $999.00 for.

I just think 22 watts is plenty loud, - and a very good loud at that. If you have a few minutes, listen to this interview with Dan Boule with 65 Amps at the Namm show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2sRYz4w ... r_embedded

He goes on to say that a lot of builders miss the percussive attack of the strings when doing these older style amps. Yet, the SS22 is very close in the tonal arena.

Through my Gretsch's TV Jones Classic Plus bridge pickup, I can almost nail "The Seeker" tone with the 22, it absolutely amazes me. If I dial up the volume a bit more, and use a bit more of GAIN 1 & 2, it's Malcolm Young territory - clear and jangly, but with a good grit to it. I hope the amp just stays this way with no problems in the future. The only upgrade I'll consider in a few months, is swapping out the speaker for a Scumback J75 - that should give the tone more oomph and even more clarity.

I just got the Super-Sonic Twin 100 Watt combo and so far I am very pleased. There is a little hiss in the reverb but no more than I had with a Blues-Deville 4x10 combo I owned in the past. The only real hissing issue I've found is using pedals. On the Burn channel and on the Bassman voicing of the clean channel, they sound great but on the Twin Reverb voicing of the clean channel, they hiss a lot. I've only had the amp for a few days so I am still learning what works best but so far, I love it. Plugged straight into the Twin Reverb voicing on the clean channel is a dream with a single coil strat! I can't wait to get it in a club because even on the 25 watt club setting, it is LOUD!
