Thanks, Arjay, I was already thinking about that.

But I am in Austria/Europe, it is a completely different market here, hard to find used Deluxe amps...right now there is not one on ebay.

What about a SF Deluxe? A friend of mine has one, but just became a father and has no more time to play, so he's thinking of selling it...but he wants something like 1500€.

An excellent amp but he's asking more than I rightfully think it's worth (at least here in "the colonies").

I saw a nice '80 silverface DR on Ebay this evening for less than $1000 USD. Near mint, footswitch, paperwork, etc. The proverbial "cream puff". Not sure what it'd cost to ship it across the pond though.

P'raps I spoke in haste......how does "1500€" translate into US dollars?

No, Arjay, you are correct. And that's a bout 2000 bucks right now.
Prices here are ridiculous compared to the US. You are living in a GAS-addicts paradise, I know because I lived in LA for a year.
Problem with shipping over the pond is, you have to pay cutoms plus the tax - which comes to about 30% plus in total, and they also include shipping in the price. So in the end you pay about the same price as if you bought it here....

Indeed. A "no-win situation" all around from the sound of it.

Zut et merde alors!

Yeah, I am lusting for the Toneking Imperial, but it is probably too expensive...I will try to talk my friend down on the Sf Deluxe, it is from 77-78...

+1 for the Mesa Lonestars. Great amps. I have both models and the Classic will get you well-within Fender territory, BUT, it's "Fender chime" is dependent on your speaker choice. Just an FYI and of course YMMV.

I also have been looking at the Lonestar or the Lonestar Special. I love my DRRI, I'll never get rid of it, but I want another flavor. Maybe an EL84 amp. By the way, my DRRI is super quiet. It's on right now, with the volume on 3, reverb on 2, guitar plugged in, silent. Mine was made in 2006

Very sad to hear all these new Fender amps have issues... I'm kinda glad the reissue amps are of better quality, I'm sure not all of 'em are. I'm extremely happy with my DRRI, extremely quiet at low volumes and screams at full volume! :D

I had the Lonestar Special, great amp, lots of options... can get very nice Fender clean but these EL84 will eventually rattle. I sold it and went with a simple amp like the DRRI, just turn it up and enjoy the sweet tone of the 6V6 tubes!

Haven't had any tube at all in my Lonestar Special. I also wouldn't call it's clean a Fender clean, but it definitely has sparkle and sizzle.

Now you guys have gotten me all nervous about even trying to bring this amp home. So, with all of your comments, I sent customer relations at Fender an e-mail.

SEE BELOW
:
I spoke with Eric in customer service about 30 minutes ago, regarding the Supersonic 22.

It's come to my attention that this model has some "inherent" issues.

1) Sonic Boom — as some users refer to it. Is a commonly known problem — "A loud POP that coincides with activating the switch from the “Vintage” to the “Burn” channel, especially while playing."
Quote taken from Joe at the Brown Oscillator Company: http://brownoscillator.com/wordpress/?page_id=2

Joe however has devised a switching solution - that Fender should probably know about. Joe concedes, "In order to remedy this, I added another mute actuator circuit that responds to the switching direction seemingly overlooked by the designers."

2) Reverb Buzzing — A known issue with the Reverb unit. When turned on, a buzzing occurs that some users feel is extremely annoying. See full commentary here:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=52203

One owner of the amp at the Fender Forum said "Fender should re-label the reverb control knob to "buzz" control"

When I spoke with Eric in customer service earlier, he said he'd ask around the office to see what the consensus was on the issue. Answer: That it is an inherent buzz do to the higher gain structure of the amp.

Another owner of the Supersonic 22 said: "Tragic, really. Like the worst of the CBS era, but with a tenfold decrease in quality."

I just want Fender to be aware that there's a general consensus within this Forum - and others as well, that these issues are not simply "inherent" but rather design flaws and poor quality control.

It makes me ask, do you even listen to, play and test these amps before you send them out to market? I'm being extremely persistent with these issues because despite the tonal quality of the amp, there are enough design flaws with this amp to deter me from purchasing it at all.

Did it not ever occur to the quality control team at Fender, to isolate Supersonic 22's that don't have this problem - and compare them with models that do?

You should take a more pro-active approach to your faithful customer base by addressing their issues and concerns. In the midst of this, it's most likely that you're losing some of them to these quality control issues - most of their concerns have not even been addressed. Again, another poster in the forum said "Fender has deemed the reverb buzz issue — a non issue.

I can't believe the "inherent" issues Eric explained to me, would be considered plausible by anyone at Fender. There are a myriad of amplifiers on the market that showcase similar features, using 6V6 tubes, with reverb units - that DO NOT have any of these issues.

Thanks for the info.

Sad, isn't it?

My SS22 is back at Fender Service Point since a couple of weeks with no comment or info. (At least last time I checekd with the shop who sent it there.)

I guess it will stay there indefinitely....
