Hello,

When I turn on my Blues Junior it makes some terrible noises until it warms up, then its OK . I does this with the Volume and Master both at zero. The Guitar Center guy says I need new tubes, but I just purchased this amp three months ago and really haven't used it very much at all.

This is my first amp \ electric guitar so I'm not certain what the problem is, but I can't seem to find any other threads with a similar problem.

I'm a computer tech and have a experience with electronics. I'm just having a difficult time believing that the tubes are already fried. I was planning on doing the BillM mods, but don't want to start until I resolve this issue first.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Archer

Did I do something wrong, like not let it warm up long enough. Or do tubes just go bad sometimes? They only have about 10 hours on them.

The most experience I've had with tubes was watching my Dad change them in a TV about 30 years ago!

Thanks again for your help.

Sometimes tubes just go bad. I have actually bought brand new tubes that were microphonic.

Sorry for not asking earlier, do you think I should replace them all, or try to find the bad tube in question?

Would it most likely be the 12AX7s or the EL84s? Can the Guitar Center check the tubes like they used to be able to do with TV tubes?

Thanks again.

My personal opinion is to just go ahead and replace them all.

I seriously doubt if any GC is set up to test tubes.

I have two Fender tube amps (one is a Blues Jr.), both purchased new, and BOTH had at least one bad preamp tube (I don't know if it was more than one as I replaced all of them.) I'd suggest replacing the preamp tubes first to see if that fixes the problem, and if not, then the power tubes.

I recommend Tung-Sol 12AXT (preamp). I have not had any issues with power tubes as yet.

If you live close to a Fender authorized repair center, they may replace them for free (w/ Fender tubes, of course), but if you are a substantial distance away, it may not be worth the drive(s).

I hope a Fender rep is reviewing this post as this is an all too frequent problem with Fender's tube suppliers which drastically harms Fender's reputation. Fender why are you putting such junk in great amps?

You can try tapping each tube gently with a pencil eraser. If one gives you noise try replacing it. I'd bet it's a preamp tube.

Sorry, typo on my last reply. Should read 12AX7, not 12AXT
