Hi there,

I wonder if you can help me, Today I replaced the stock speaker with a Rajun Cajun, all went well, I then swapped the stock tubes for a set of JJ's, power up, channel 1 works perfectly (and sounds great) but when I switch to channel 2, the light comes on but the amp is silent.

I've tried putting the old tubes in but get the same result.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Do you have the pedal plugged in? If so, unplug. Works?

Try switching the speaker wires. A real stretch, but who knows. I have JJ's in mine, and they are just perfect (swap out that 12AX7 turd to a JJ too).

And ... I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but are the Volume 2 and Gain knobs above nil?

There's definitely not going to be a big difference. It will change the sound a tad though.

What kind of tonal differences will the JJ have compared to a sovtek 12ax7?

Changing Pre-Amp tube on the SCXD will make no sonic difference it is just the phase inverter. Just get a reliable one. You may see some change in the power tube section. Make sure you rebias though.

Correct.

The front end of these amps are all op-amps and chips.

A re-bias is mandatory when installing new power tubes.

Stinger above is correct. Mostly there is not a whole lotta difference in tone with a new 12AX7 (though I think I heard a Tung-Sol I tried was a little brittle and "harsh" compared to the JJ, but the jury is still out).

What was happening when these first came out, and it may have improved, was the 12AX7 they shipped with (mine said "Fender 12AX7", but most of those are cheap Groove Tubes, I believe) were frying out. Instantly. For no reason. But they were still glowing. With no sound. And usually within 3 - 6 months. So to avoid the, OMG I'm playing in front of people and the amp just took a powder, I'd recommend replacing asap. And always carrying a spare (or 6).
