Not likely to be harmful -- some amps do it, some don't (the luck of the draw). Some owners like to tie a suppression cap from one leg of the standby switch to ground. I don't know if it's totally effective though.

My BDRI does it at times. I don't worry about it.

If you hit the power switch off, without touching the standby, do you avoid the popping noise? It's kind of a convtroversy as to just how useful a standby switch is, when you are turning the amp off for any length of time and not going to use it for awhile.

Yes. That's how I shut my amp off to avoid the pop.

Yes there is controversy. Some people say to put the amp in standby for a few minutes to let the tubes "cool down" before turning the power off. That's stupid and a contradiction. The tubes don't get any "cooler" while in standby. Remember when you turned your amp on you were in standby mode to let the tubes heat up. The tubes are just as hot in standby as when in play mode (the tubes' heaters are on in both modes). The only difference between standby and play mode is that voltage isn't hitting the tube while in standby (so use the standby when powering on! I'm not arguing that).

That being siad, it doesn't matter which order you turn your amp off. Both ways are fine. The only question you have to ask yourself is do you want your amp to pop or not?

Really......?

You reckon those bottles run just as hot without the B+ voltage applied to the plates? Sorry, but that's not the way it works. DC current flow through a vacuum tube (a continuous electron stream) produces heat as a by-product. The AC filament voltage at 6.3 volts provides only a minimum of excitation within the bottle and the total generated heat is substantially reduced when the amp is switched to "standby" mode.
