I love the clean sound, reverb and vibrato from my new (used) DRRI. In another post I wrote that I thought something was wrong with it because it takes pedals SO BADLY in the vibrato channel. People posted back to do some mod that is over my head, may suck tone, and I just don't want to mod my amp.

That being said, I know all DRRI owners aren't doing a mod. How are you getting a good overdrive and/or distortion sound (besides turning it up to 8+)? I don't want to have to use the normal channel for pedals and lose the Fender reverb and tremelo and great sound of the cleans on the vibrato channel...

Have you thought about running some sort of split between your guitar and pedals? After the split, you can run your pedals through the normal channel, and have a clean signal feeding to the vibrato channel.

What do you mean? Like an A/B switch that instead of going to 2 amps, goes to the diff inputs on the amp?

By having both plugged in (even thought they aren't both playing), does it suck some tone from each side?

Exactly!

As to if that'll impact the tone, I'd suggest you plug two guitars in, turn down the volume on one, and compare how it sounds versus having only one guitar plugged in.

I am doing this, and really like the results. You might too.

If you are using that Y splitter from radio shack, are you using a distortion pedal, and does it sound good or like crap like when you use one with just the vibrator channel?

I had the same issues (and it made me sell the DRRI again) but I found some pretty good overdrive tones using a Zendrive (clone), a T-Rex Alberta and a '85 Ibanez STL Super Tube. The Zendrive suited the DRRI best being a little darker and with a very fat lower midrange that just suited the amp perfectly.

I would look for another speaker if I were you, I didn't have the patience to mod it so I just moved on for a Twin Reverb.

My DRRI is modded but in a different way... I haven't done any of the Fritz mods yet, but it does have different tubes and a 15" in it. I use 2 different pedals, TS 9 and BB Preamp, depending on which guitar or pickups or speaker I'm using, one of the two always works for me... I can get a great tone even at lower (3-4) volumes, but nothing beats the DRRI once it's past 6, with or without a pedal.

You just have to find the right balance IMO, adjust your EQ for each guitar/pedal combo, you'd be surprised how great it'll sound. I play through the Vibrato channel and I'm extremely happy with the tone I get! 8)

No amount of EQ'ing will fix the fizzy chainsaw tones that comes from an overdrive/distortion pedal played through the Vibrato side. I wish it would.

What speaker is in your DRRI? What pedal are you using? Is this a new amp?

I don't hear any of the tones you're describing with my setup... :?

Ok just reread your original post... so this is a new "used" amp. What tubes are in there now and have you checked the bias? After experimenting with a bunch of tubes and bias on m DRRI I learned a lot and I know what works for me now. Bad tubes and cold bias gave me some horrible tones, with or without a pedal.

+1

Doubly so when factoring in a crappy OEM speaker as well!

It's all original in my DRRI. But I know it isn't just mine. From other posts of people talking about having to do a "Fritz mod" or other mods, it seems Fender just made this amp the way it is and it doesn't work well with a lot of the OD/Dist pedals on the vibrato channel. It's a shame.

I forgot to mention that using input 2 also helps because you can turn it up some more and get closer to that great sound you get when it's 'too loud but really great'

It's not a distortion pedal, but the Bad Monkey on either channel works real well. The BM has Low and High tone knobs, so you can thicken up the thinner Vibrato side. If your looking for a Pantera vibe, I'm not certain the DRRI will do that; though for kicks I was able to score a cheap Boss MT2 just to see if it will.

Have you tried messing with your guit's set up? Maybe it is the source of the weak sounds?
