The Champ 600 manual says the output jack is for a 4 ohm minimum speaker cabinet. I'm new to amplifiers, and would appreciate an explanation of what this means. For examples, is it okay to connect the amp to an 8 ohm or 16 ohm cabinet?

No harm is likely to occur with this mismatch. However, the amp will not develop its full rated output.

+1 Retroverbial,

I have used an 8 ohm and 16 ohm ext cab with the C600. IMO it sounded the best with the 8 ohm, 12 inch speaker. With the 16 ohm speaker, the amp loses tone and volume as compared with the 8 ohm. Very surprising amount of sound from that little amp when used with an external speaker cab, it sounds wonderful. Warning! You may not ever want to use the internal speaker again after hearing the amp with an external cab. :o

+1!

I frequently wire up my '68 Bronco to a Showman cab -- talk about growl!

Check this out. It helps explain the whole "ohm" thing.

After "Talking" the other day, I ran my Pro Jr. through my 66 bassman cab and WOW, sure opened up the tone and did it ever crank the volume :!:

Indeed!

In my case it's sort of a "Robert Cray meets SRV" vibe. Loud and room-filling but without the typical ear-piercing overload. Adding a parametric EQ to the signal chain permits controllable feedback for days.

Oh yeah, love that controlled feedback! I got great, smooth, sustain-for-days feedback using the BJr with with lots of drive and the HRd ext cab. Same with the HRDlx amp and cab running both speakers at the same time, but you can really feel it with the higher watt amp, nut-tickling sweet! 8)
