Guys, we're talking about a PJr. I am sure that a tech will bend over backwards to please anyone that brings in their PJr every time they change tubes and want a free bias adjustment. Try taking your PJr to a Fender tech, and tell him that you want the bias adjusted under warranty and see what happens. Maybe there is a TSB about the PJr bias, who knows. Good luck!

My tech wouldn't care if I brought my Champ, Pignose or any amp in. I get VIP service regardless. I wonder if Jeff Beck gets his Pro Jrs correctly biased? Nobody every said anything about a free bias adjustment.

well at any rate, ive been using el84 JJ's from eurotubes in a Pro Jr, and i remember i asked for a set with moderate breakup (as opposed to early breakup). i feel like at times the overdriven tones are a bit harsh, especially when the middle pickup is involved in some way.
i'm thinking of trying GT el84s again, to see if they make it sound better. i would use the same power rating as i had stock, which were low power. (i cant use the stock set to get accurate results because i think they're half shot. one red-plated one time. there's your hot bias. by the way, i actually had a level 2 and a level 3 GT el84 as stock. strange? FYI, the level 2 was the one that red-plated, if that explains anything.)

i dont want to hurry on changing the resistor. i trust you supro, but i dont want to take chances making mods right now, fender tech or not, so thats why i am probably going to try a fresh set of GT's.

i'm also still fiddling about with my highs usage, maybe i need to gauge that better. its all kinda confusing quite frankly. many variables could be the culprit.

question for the audience: if this amp was biased for low power GT's (at least we'd like to assume it was, and done properly. sometimes i wonder...), and now i have moderate breakup JJ's, would you say my amp is most likely biased too cold or too hot for the JJ's?
base your answer on "by the book definition" ideals. i know you cant speak for MY amp, but based on average common knowledge, what would be the likely situation?

i told you, im a rookie. still learning about bias in general. ive been trying to read up here and there also.

The GTs are not low power, the rating is simply for the breakup point. The lower rating is early breakup. Using the higher rating will give more clean headroom, later breakup. It is very likely that any tubes that you install in the PJr will be running hot. Each tube brand will have different idle current at the same bias setting, so some brands will run hotter than others.

What to listen for if the bias is too hot?

The sound of the fire engine sirens as it speeds to your assistance..
