Hello there,

I don't have much experience with tube amps and need a little advice:
Last week I purchased a Super Sonic 22. My local GC did not have it in stock so I ordered it. I was not impressed by the Burn channel but loved the Vintage channel in it's two modes. However, the Reverb was creating feedback when turned past eight and switching from the vintage channel to the burn channel produced a loud pop sometimes.
So I took it back and brought home a DRRI instead. I had read that the SS22 was based partly in that particular amp, so I figured I could get the same clean tone. I also got a Fulltone OCD to make up for the lost overdrive channel. Now here is the issue:
Although they are both 22W, it seems to me that I have to turn up the DRRI volume level to 4 (I'm using input 1) to get the same volume I got with the SS22 at level 2. Is it me or the Super Sonic has more headroom for the clean tone? Can the DRRI handle clean tones when practicing with a drummer? -Also, the day I brought it home (yesterday) the DRRI was making sort of an awful crackling noise for at least an hour. I was convinced I had to return it. However, I played with it for a few hours today and the noise it's gone. Should I still take it back?
-Any advice would be greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

-Christian.

I would return it for exchange. And whatever amp you end up buying, insist that the sales staff at the store take the amp out of the box and allow you to check it out. Give it a full "road test" at all volumes and using any onboard effects in various combinations. If it falls short in any operating parameters or something just doesn't sound right, pass it by. Too many buyers are too willing to accept any piece of crap thrown their way at many of the "big box" guitar stores, then live with disappointment because something is amiss with the product.

+100

Don"t settle for anything short of flawless operation!
At the price they get for these amps they should play and sound perfect.

+1,000 Never take an amp home in an unopened box.
Test it with your own guitar too.

Exactly, the DRRI is an incredible amp,but its only as good as the quality control at the store.

Hi sorry to hear about your amp problem. I have a drri had her for five plus years and no problems there just great amps turn her to seven and run the loudness form your guitars volume control the drri may be only 22 watts but believe me they have no trouble keeping up a loud drummer. they sound there best when you turn them up. by the way the crackling noise in your amp sounds like tube problems ei the pre amp tubes they can do this from new. they can make al sorts of weird noises like pops and crackling. they need to change all the pre amp tubes to fix the probelm with your amp and then take it form there.CHeers from aus...

Using the Bassman (fat) setting on the SS-22 you will perceive the volume to be louder than the DRRI at the same settings.

Don't worry, the DDRI will be loud enough for band use.

If a DRRI isn't loud enough, might be time for a new band.
