I have a Blues Deville Reissue and on the drive channel it starts squealing if the drive knob is turned up. The treble knob does it too (it is right next to the drive knob). The knobs seem to be connected because the threshold of good sound to squeal sound changes depending on how those two dials are set. Changed preamp tubes to see if that would help. With lower gain tubes it still squeals on the drive channel but I have more play and can turn the dial up more before the squeal comes in.
The squeal does not come in gradually it is either there or not.

Any ideas?

I suspect bad soldering (well known ageing illness) around V2 and/or the pot R7 "drive" that may be broken.

I had an amptech go through it and do a general solder joint inspection and repair.
He is the one that changed the preamp tubes.
Is it possible he could have missed bad solder joints in these areas? Does not seem likely unless the joints are in hidden or hard to reach areas. I'm not an electronics guy, I don't have any idea, just asking.

my tele with a little 59 in the bridge would squeel bad too at higher volumes but it might be that guitar, I still have to see if my SG does it. I changed tubes also.

a 5751 has a like 20% less gain, look for a GE tube. What brand did you put in?

T.P.H.

May be, it is possible that he forgot one bad soldering but I don't think.

One question: Does it squeal without guitar plugged?

Can you ask to the tech to check the resistors and the capacitors ?
Specially R7 (pot)

Could just be a bad preamp tube. Even new tubes can be bad.

I know this sounds crazy, so you can kick me in the hoo-haw... but I've had microphonic caps do the howling thing on me, esp at volume. Have your tech do the old "Wooden Chinese Chopstick Test"--- he maybe able to find the culprit.

I'd probe the resistors, too. What the heck, won't hurt.

The preamp tubes are RCA and ge old tubes
But he tested them and we tried different combos of tubes to try and get the tube rattle from the amp down to a usable level. Common problem it seems w these amps.
None of the tubes made a difference in the squeal, only where it came in at due to higher or lower gain of tube being used.

Since the problem seems to be related to the drive and treble controls only I dont think it is a tube issue. Seems more likely to me it would be in the pots or circuit between the two controls.

The amp does make the squeal sound even if no guitar/cable is plugged in.

Could you ask to your tech to measure all resistors (and Pots) around V2 and Tone ?

+1 Maybe a good application for tube dampeners?

Always go for the simplest thing first when troubleshooting then move on from there. The weakest link in any tube amp are the tubes themselves.

Here is a link to the service manual which might be of some help to you. The front page says "Blues Deluxe" but both the Deluxe and Deville Reissues are included in the schematics.

Thanks for the info guys.

I did get a tube dampener from Fender recently,
It made a real difference in tube vibration.

I will probably have my amp guy check it out again when I have some time and $.
If there are any tests I can do myself I prefer to do that first though.
I am aware of the danger involved in messing with the wrong stuff in there though.

I have seen several mod kits for sale for these amps.
Has anyone tried these, are they worth doing?
It seems like the amp could benifit from some tonel and reliability upgrades.
