Hi everyone, I had one of my 6L6's fall out, prooly form being in the back of my car most of the time. I noticed that the small plastic guide pin had broken off inside the holder. So it was kinda hard to get that part out. I did, being careful to unplug and not touch any o f the parts in side. So off I go to the only Music store we have here to get a set of 6L^ made by Groove Tube( GT-6L6-ged-m) So back home I go and shove em in. Now the amp plays but at one a tiny percent of how loud it should be.. Do I need to bias that thing? Is that why I have no volume?? Or is there a deeper problem?? Help! Mark

Hi markdavid,

Even if the bias was wrong for the new tubes, unless they red-plated and immediately fried (which is possible), the volume would still be as loud as before. I would think that you would've noticed if the tubes fried. You should check the bias any time that you change output tubes, because it is possible to red-plate a new set of a different type of tubes at the same bias setting as the old tubes. So, if tubes didn't red-plate, the bias adjust isn't the problem.

Did you notice that the tube had fallen out BEFORE powering up the amp? If you didn't power up the amp, and removed the broken piece, is it possible that you left a wire disconnected, or possibly the tube socket or connections are broken?

shimmilou, thanks for your replay. The tube that was in the socket that had the broken one lights up. So I get very low volume out of it.. The thing is I had used the amp after I had found the tube lose. And I shove it back in. It played fine. Last night at rehearsal I noticed that it was not lite up. Played great!
So today I got a new set of tubes and no loudness at all..thanks, Mark

I'm not really clear about exactly you are saying happened. So, you are saying that your amp played great with the broken tube pushed back in, but you noticed that the broken tube was not lighting up, and you replaced the output tubes and now have no sound? I can't imagine that it played great with one output tube not lighting up. :?

Are both of your new output tubes lighting up, indicating good filament supply? If both new tubes are lighting up but no sound, and your old tubes sounded fine, then it sounds like the new tubes are bad. If one or both new tubes are not lighting up, like one old tube wasn't lit up, then you may have an amp problem, or it could still be that the new tubes are bad.
