With the prices of Princeton Reverb Reissues going over the $899 mark, would it be better to get a Silverface Princeton Reverb for the same price?

Reason I ask is, if the SFPR is all original it will cost around the same as the reissue. And, there are a ton of them out there. In addition, the transformers, caps, cap can, some carbon comp resistors, tubes, and Oxford speaker may need replacing which is about $250-$300 more for a DIY.

But with the prices going up on the Blackface to exuberant levels, I feel the early Silverface Princeton Reverbs will be in demand shortly and will be harder to find.

"Am I wrong?"

I want the amp to play, not to keep in the closet (I'm not an amp collector)

Late silverface PR's can usually be found for a grand or under. And unlike the blackfaces (which command upwards of $2000 and are historically significant), you can mod a silverface to the point of unrecognizibility and nobody will ever miss it. Repair parts do not represent a recurring cost and repro components represent only a modest outlay at best. I say go for a clean-and-serviceable silverface......recondition and repair as necessary or mod it to your heart's content, then play it for a lifetime.

Thanks for the input.

I saw a 74 at a vintage store and it was in Excellent condition with original everything RCA tubes and all. It sounded realy good at low volume but turned up over 5 the Oxford speaker flubbed out. I think that was the sweet spot for that particular amp. They were selling Silverface Vibro Champs for $599.

The hunt for Princeton Reverb continues.

Ahh, thanks for the info Snowy.

I considered building one for several months, but the costs of kits are going up, and I was looking at the Weber kit also. But, I come to the conclusion that a original Princeton Reverb may hold its value in the long run. And the prices keep getting higher as the reissues' prices go up as well. However, I do plan to build another Tweed amp in the future, I think they are great amps and a better value to build and they do hold their value well too.

I recently got a used Princeton Reverb Reissue for €700 and it's my new "amp love" ;-)

Great tone, portable, great sounding reverb and tremolo.

All the best
Martin

Thanks Arjay,
But I think I may avoid any mods for now. Maybe save some of the old tubes at the most and hope the transformers will hold up.
