So, I am recovering from tennis elbow--which includes lots of not-playing-guitar time. So with my free time, I built my first speaker cabinet. It was fun and a lot easier than I thought it would be.

27 X 20 X 10" (roughly the size of a Fender Twin)

3/4" China Birch 4' X 4' $22 (half a sheet--I have the other half in the garage)
Screws, sandpaper, polyurethane, etc: $35
Fender Oxblood Grill Cloth http://angela.com/search.aspx?find=grill+cloth: $23
Handle, Jack Plate, Feet, etc http://www.mojotone.com : $16
Approximate total of parts: $96

I used a home table saw, miter saw (not necessary), drill, router, and orbital sander. Borrowed some 3 ft wood clamps.

The speakers are Celestion Alnico Blues I bought from http://www.avatarspeakers.com

I had so much fun, I'm going to build another one.

Very cool... I've always thought it would be fun to build an extension cab for my twin. Well done!

Nice!

Been thinking of doing one myself!

What did you use for plans? Or was it a educated guess?

I have no knowledge of how to build a cabinet but I'm wondering two things
1) Shouldn't the speaker poles be connected in parallel or does your way (in series) is how it's done?
2) Wouldn't be better if you had left some openings for the bass relief?

I could not find plans. I took my Marshall 4 X 12 cabinet "apart" to study it.
Basically:

I started with a 4 X 4' 3/4" 11-ply Birch plywood (don't waist your effort on other types of plywood)

Front and Back 25.5" X 18.5"
Right and Left 20" X 10"
Top and Bottom 25.5" X 10"

I butted the top and bottom to the sides of the right and left...this gives outside dimensions of 27" X 20" X 10"

The inside furring strips are 3/4" by 3/4"
25.5" (4)
17" (2)
4 to 5" (4)

the back strips are the 2-17" and 2-25.5". Set them in 3/4" back from the edge.
the front/baffle board strips are the 2-25.5" and the 4 5" strips placed with gaps where the speakers will be close to the edge. Set them in 1 1/2" back from the edge to give some "recess" for the speaker baffle.

Everything was wood-glued. Clamps, clamps, clamps. I used 1 1/4" #8 wood screws for the top/bottom/left/right/back. But glue is strong enough without screws.
The furring strips are attached by glue only.

Take your time cutting the circles out for the speakers. The holes should have an 11" diameter. The speaker mounting holes are 8 1/4" apart. I used a jig saw for the circles but I used a router with a home-made circle jig for my second cabinet (in progress)

Warning: I am not a professional cabinet maker. Don't trust my instructions without checking your own measurements, etc. Of course, keep your fingers away from the blades!
2nd Warning: This is fun! :P

Hi.
The speakers were 8 ohms each. By wiring them in Series, I have a 16 ohm load.
If my speakers were 16 ohms each, wiring them in Parallel would yield an 8 ohm load.
I chose 16 ohms, because I plan on building another cabinet. With two 16 ohm cabinets, the combined, parallel load will be 8 ohms.

Question 2: I thought about an open back design, such as with a Fender Twin or Hot Rod Deville, but I chose to go closed back hoping for more focused bass. Marshall's cabinets, both 4X12 and 2X12 (model 1936) are sealed closed. I am very happy with the sound I'm getting.

Thanks for your questions. Believe me, I asked a lot of questions while building this cabinet, too. :)
