I have a Fender Hot Rod that was promised new power tubes and he ordered these, Im going to get them installed after work today (I get off at Noon) Yippy! Any how I have Some Off Brand Blues Tubes in them I forget who makes them, a name I have never heard of before. "Custome Glass or Classic Glass" somthing like that. They sound good but the last I had it looked over by an Amp Tech he said thet're still good but need to be replaced.
Well me and the Shop owner I got the amp from dicussed it with me and recommended the:
Sovtek 6L6WXT+ Duet Platinum tubes:
Details:
Sovtek 6L6WXT+ Duet Platinum Matched
The Sovtek brand of military grade vacuum tubes are made in Russia and considered to be among the finest currently available. Modeled after the vintage RCA 6L6GC "blackplate," the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ features larger plate dimensions and improved grid structure for increased power handling capabilities. The 6L6WXT+ also features mica spacers with metal springs to eliminate tube rattle and microphonics. It yields a 20% higher output than the Sovtek 5881WXT and offers superior tone and overall performance to any 6L6 or KT66. The ultimate 6L6, the WXT+ will improve the sound of any 6L6 guitar amplifier. Matching power tubes for equal current draw is important for maximum performance. Sovtek's platinum matching process consists of a 24 hour tube burn-in period followed by a bias (plate) current measurement in milliamps to ensure accurate matching.
does the 24 hour burn in and does this mean they were pre-biased meaning I dont have to bias them when I put them in my amp?
Has any one tried these in a Fender HRD? I curious to what they will sound like? I know that Sovteks are great tubes but Im afraid it will effect the sweet blues tone.

Hi morbe,

That sounds like the description from TheTubeStore, and I've found them to be very good at describing the tubes, I order from them a lot, great people there in Canada. The burn-in doesn't mean "pre-biased", you will still need to set the bias on the amp for whichever tubes that you install, the bias is an amp setting for where you want the tubes idle dissipation wattage. The burn-in simply means that the tubes were used in a simulated amp load for a continuous period to help insure proper operation and more accurate matching when installed in an amp.

I haven't used these new tubes yet, but IMO the Sovtek tubes are some of the best out there today, probably the best new production tubes IMO. Comparing these new tubes to the RCA black plates is a very tall order, I would have to hear them to believe it, but I don't doubt TheTubeStore at all. If they are even close to the RCA tubes, they will be one-helluva-good tube for any type of playing, especially compared to the stock tubes. I wouldn't hesitate to try them, even though there isn't much feedback out yet since they are so new.

Sovtek 6L6WXT+ tubes have been around for a long time. They added clarity and a little high end to the amp. The EH6L6 tube is it's improved version. I've used both for years and they are both a good sounding tube. I replaced the Sovteks because excessive tube rattle after being in the amp a while. The EH tube lasted longer before the rattling started. Spring tube retainers help if you get them on there just right.

How long until those EH's started developing rattle issues?

It took about 3 months in a blues deluxe, since they're right up against the speaker. Prolly last longer in another amp. Tone was always great.

Thanks, RJ.

I've been "field-testing" a pair of EH's in an old Bandmaster, trying to establish some base-line data. I'm into my second year with them and they're still holding up fine.

Matched quad of St Petersburg made Svetlana (=C=) brown base 6L6GC on Ebay now. Should have light gold or black lettering. Looks like original boxes. May want to mail seller, re:test strength and noise level. I ain't associated with buyer.

Funny how the old amp designs are better than the new ones. Seems we haven't improved on anything since the 50's except gain and channel switching.

Beware the words "new/improved"!

Slide rules, vacuum tubes, and metallic alloys got us to the friggin' moon.

Today -- in the age of super computers, microchips, and composites -- we can't seem to find our way back there!

The whole tube rattle issue in smaller amps is one of the reasons I went back to a head and cab configuration.
