I don't think it's any deep dark secret that I don't esteem the HR series of amps very highly, even though I have now owned two of them myself. OK they're both Blues amps, not Hot Rods, same difference. For the longest time I felt FMIC was doing the public a disservice by making a line of entry level tube amps just so they could make a buck reaching another market. I saw it as a dilution of the marque. An abomination. Now I think my mind is changing somewhat. These entry level amps that the newbies love and the seasoned pros hate are doing one very important thing. They're introducing people to the world of tube amps who would have otherwise probably gone solid state if there hadn't been some low priced alternative. They're still lesser amps and I'm still gonna bash them but now I'm going to enjoy bashing 'em. Previously it felt like a chore imposed upon me to bash them. It felt like I had been conscripted against my will and was compelled to steer people away from them and towards good amps. Now I think I'm going to view it as a privelege to steer people away from them and towards good amps. My tour is up and I am re-enlisting.

Soooo... you won't see me doing anything different. I just wanted to let you know I'll be smiling when I do it from now on instead of frowning.

Oh man, I just love it when enlightenment brings you right back to where you were but only different.

Ten people can love something and you never hear anything about it.

One person can hate something and that is all you hear.

FWIW, I love my BDRI. :D

I hate it when someone pulls a 360 like that!

Well...Okay...Bash away, I just don't see the point of annoying the folks about it... All the bashing of these amps has driven a lot of folks away... Its a broken record. It seems that when one has a good comment or if they have questions... the bashers jack the thread and turn it sour...
I could care less what ANYBODY thinks about gear.. In fact if you make your decisions based entirely on "talk" from forums... well Ive got some stuff to sell Ya :D
Be constructive...Dont bash... My opinion only, YMMV

I did say something constructive. I said they bring new people into the tube amp world.

A 1st Sgt, once told me:

"If your going to fly with the buzzards at night, you better be able to soar with the eagles in the morning".

Drive-on.

As much crap as they get, they're the house amp at one of my favourite venues, and sound great.

With the sheer number sold, there will be lemons.

Third gen versions of these amps sound great. The change to the volume and treble pots made a world of difference. Of course, that should have been done right the first time around. True, they are PC boards, and soldering is questionable.. But they do sounds great once you dial in the tone you are looking for. For some, this is as close as they will ever get to a professional tube amp. Later on, if they can justify the expense, I am sure that many will move to a pro amp w/PTP wiring.

Just my opinion.

I really liked my Hot Rod Deluxe when I had it. It didn't have any of the reliability problems alot of people talk about and I thought it sounded great.

The HRDx's are great amps for beginner/intermediate players. They are easy to mod, nice platform for pedals, not too heavy but like others have said, once you get to the gigging level another amp may be necessary.

I was told that I was "Meant to soar with the eagles not scratch with the chickens."

Whats wrong with the HRD? I've been around music for years its not the best but its a good amp better than alot of whats out there.

As they say, it's in your fingers. Take the time to become one with your guitar and amp and you will make sweet music.
