Hi guys, new here on the forum!

I have a hot rod deluxe that i purchased around 2000. It's a great amp, but i keep having the same problem over and over. After having it for about 6 months i started noticing that i was getting odd, inconsistent distortion in my clean channel. It was very slight but then got worse and worse. Then it started to literally switch channels real quick on me. As i would play and if i used any effects (tube screamers, compressor) i would see the light on the amp start to dim out and the light on the foot switch would sometimes go away completely! I was getting higher and then lower levels of sound output.

So i heard about a really reputable amp repair shop in town and took it in. The guy called me in two days and said it was my tubes. He replaced the tubes with a brand that he likes and i've never heard of (ruby tubes??). Picked it up and it sounded like new!

Took it home and didn't gig at all, just playing around in the house with it every so often and it started doing it again within 6 months. So, i decided to go online and order replacement, matched tubes. Got them and replaced them and within 2 months it was doing it again.

Any clue what's going on? I'm not gigging right now so it's not like the volume ever goes above 2-3 and it's not played that much either. :oops:

Maybe there's a short somewhere... try taking it to another shop and see what they say.

I have a fender HRD its a bit older. from 92 or maybe even 96. Any how. Mine would cut off completely at high levels as if it had a circut protector. They did the same thing. Changed out tube, but there was in fact one bad tube (Ruby Tubes a decent Tubes BTW) After days of it having this issue I took it to a repair man who couldnt fix the issue so they thought maybe there was a short some where so he checked all the diodes and do-hickeys in the amp and just simply resoldered ever sing solder joint and that did the trick! migt want to see what that will cost. Hell to even re heat the solder joints isnt a big deal just to make sure there is no cracked joints.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I feel that this repair guy is very reputable. He's been working on primarily tube amps (obviously cause of the dates) for over 35 years. When i took my amp in, there were amps everywhere! The guy's name is Lynn Myers.

++++1

You can change tubes all day long and it still won't get rid of your problem. The Hot Rods are infamous for cold solder joints which lead to the amp cutting in and out and switching channels at random. Have your tech give the connections a good once over. Check out this very informative website all about the usual problems of Hot Rod amps and how to cure them: http://www.justinholton.com/hotrod/

Thanks again for the suggestion. I'm going to take it back to him and ask him about your suggestion and read over the link.

I agree with the others, likely bad solder joints. Specifically in the +/- 16 volt supply around the two 5 watt resistors by the bias adjust pot, would cause channel switching. I can't believe that anyone would even think about replacing tubes for a channel switching problem, that is strange. It probably didn't act up in the shop, but if someone works on modern amps, they should be well aware of solder joint problems. :idea:
