... the first thing a lot of guys online seem to do is change the speakers. I guess this logic is a bit lost on me. Maybe you guys who like to do this could clarify:

a) If you didn't like the way the amp sounded to begin with, why did you buy it in the first place?
b) You just paid for a new amp, and then you immediately have to go $100+ into it for new speakers. Depending on the size/number of speakers, this can be an expensive "experiment".
c) Why not just buy a head and cab setup instead? If you find a cabinet you like, equipped with the speakers you like, then it's simply a matter of swapping the head unit. Seems to me this would be more economical.

I guess I'm of the though process that if an amp or guitar doesn't sound good, then I don't buy it. I could see in the case of vintage or used amps where the stock speaker(s) are shot. So, why do you guys do this on a brand new amp?

For me It's not that the amp didn't sound good to begin with, but sometimes it's becuase a speaker swap will make a good sounding amp sound great.
Peace....

OEM speakers are like OEM tubes -- the cheapest components a manufacturer can successfully market. Neophytes put up with lowest-bidder crap because they haven't yet developed the ability to discern the sonic nuances between a quality component and piece of absolute junk. If you like the Italian Jensens or the Shanghai Celestions, more power to you -- enjoy them.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

More so for high gain amps with ceramic speakers. They use lightweight cost effective speakers to lower the weight for shipping.

Think large scale and the masses of cheap tube amp that must be shipped from abroad and distributed.

However, some people don't get much tonal difference when switching from say a modern 8"fender speaker to a modern 8"jensen speaker of the same magnet side and design. On the other hand, changing a 12" speaker has more flexability in shaping the sound of the amp.

I like what Retroverbial has to say. With that in mind I am looking for a speaker replcement for my blues deluxe. The low e string sounds like a bass guitar even with the bass very low. I am looking for more clarity on the low end warm and thick but not bassy if that makes sense.
Weber suggested one of their ceramic speakers over an alnico
what do you guys think?
THanks :)

People replace speakers for, I imagine, the same reason they replace pickups - stock sounds fine, and a specific replacement can sound better.

I love my C30, but I've been thinking of dropping in a Red Fang or Blue Dog for a while.

I should think that Weber's "California 12" (without the aluminum voice-coil cap) would do nicely. They don't "flab out" easily at the low end and without the aluminum dome, you'll hear some extremely warm and rich mids.

Best of luck, HTH

The only "new" amp I've bought in over 25 years is a Fender '57 Deluxe RI which had the Jensen RI alnico speaker in it,since I love Weber speakers,I bought one and put it in the Deluxe,it sounds so much better than the Jensen RI,which doesn't sound like an old Jensen at all to me.
