I bought a used DRRI a week ago. It sounds awesome clean on the normal and the vibrato channel. When I plug an overdrive/distortion pedal into the vibrato side it sounds very bad. Very fizzy on the distortion - like a chainsaw. On the normal channel it sounds fine, but I really prefer the vibrato channel for reverb, tremelo and the nice clean sounds. There is obviously something wrong since the sounds with the pedal are soooo different between the normal and the vibrato channel. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Sounds like your tone is a victim of "bright-cap-itis". The DR and DRRI have always had an extra tone cap in the vibrato channel to act as a pre-set "bright switch". Many owners clip one lead on this component to render it inert. Google "Fritz Mods" for more specifics (it's not beyond the capabilities of most guitarists to do).

Zone C6 on the schematic. Looks like "C10".

That's a bummer. Sounds like even cutting the high cap won't help if I'm playing at lower levels, which I do a lot.

Is this the same issue with a Bassman reissue? I'm considering selling the DRRI and getting one of those if that works better.

The 5F6-A's tone stack is completely different from the DRRI.

And clipping the DRRI's bright cap will make a positive sonic difference at low volume levels.

Instead of clipping the the bright cap off completely, you could install a on/off switch to bring the bright cap in or take it out of the circuit. That is if you don't mind drilling a hole into the chasis.
Just a thought.

I don't want to spoil your fun (but I will...) but your description fits perfectly with my (past) DRRI ownership. It sounds incredible clean but with overdrive boxes it gives you the icepick with harsh brittle tones.

I took out the bright cap (and I made a picture guide of it HERE for your info) but it did not solve my issues with the sound even if it did help some. I gave up and sold it again but you could consider buying a USED (as in 'not new'!) speaker for it. I did try plugging it into a (new) Weber 12A150 and it didn't really help.

Another way could be trying new stomp boxes. I had to change all my overdrives and I got really close to something good with a Zendrive, a T-Rex Alberta and an old Tube Screamer (Ibanez Super Tube STL '85).

sorry!

Jim

I have the same problem! It sounds really hissy like television snow/noise. If the levels are up close to full the amp will squeal. I'm not a pedal guy but I own a DS-1 I got on my birthday last year and a couple of cheap Danelectros. The DR sounds amazing though so I wouldn't consider selling. The reverb is THE BEST! :) I use a Squier Classic Vibe Duo Sonic.

I have no problems with using lots of different overdrive/fuzz pedals on the Normal channel. Just stick with that one when using those types of pedals - problem solved.

I guess Fender does the bright cap thing to help make humbuckers sound more Fenderish.

Deliberate or not, it does brighten up a Les Paul with humbuckers. Which is why I left the bright cap in situ in mine and reserve the vibrato channel for my Gibsons.

That doesn't solve the problem because the vibrato channel sounds so much nicer when clean than the normal, plus it has the reverb and tremelo I love, which I use with pedals. If it had a way to switch between the 2 channels with a footswitch that would cure it, but that isn't an option.
