I just purchased my first tube amp and noticed that even with the volume all the way down, the amp still has a fair amount of output while clean. The overdrive will turn all the way off but not the clean. Is that normal?

It should not.

Define "fair amount".

By "fair amount", I would compare it to normal radio volume or maybe a little louder. In order to play at night without bothering others in the house, I have to turn the volume down to half on my guitar. Also, the sound is a bit "dirty" sounding until you hit 2 on the volume at which time it jumps in volume and cleans up.

New development...All of a sudden, the amp is working fine. Volume control will cut off the output and sound quality is improved. The clean is much cleaner now...like the overdrive channel is off like it should be. Maybe the tubes have to break in? I don't know. Any ideas now?

Tubes don't require a break-in. Did you jiggle something? Sounds liek a loose connection or maybe a dirty pot. Did you buy the amp new or used?

+2 on loose connection. Probable solder joint problem, especially considering that it changed back to normal operation.

The amp is brand new although a floor model. I didn't wiggle or shake anything, just turned it off and back on later...I'm leaning towards a loose solder joint.

Sorry tube heads but I resolved my DeVille problem by taking it back and getting a Mustang IV. So far, I love the Mustang.

Thanks for all the replies and help.
