I've got an SRRI and a CVR. Just wondering what everyone's preference is for new production tubes for these (and similar) amps. Please no NOS recommendations (I know all about vintage RCA's, etc...).

The Sov-Tek's, JJ's, and Tung-Sol re-issues are pretty good. As well, I've been "field-testing" a pair of EHX 6L6's in a '66 Bandmaster with very positive results thus far.

The EHX 6L6s are probably 6L6WXT+ Sovteks and are a good sounding tube! Mine were labeled 6L6EH and looked exactly like my Sovteks for a second amp! Same tubes!

For the SRRI:

I don't know what a "CVR" is. Sorry.

That was my impression as well.

It depends on what tubes you're talking about. There are tube comparison charts out there that describe the sonic characteristics of the different tube brands for the different models and those traits don't always carry over from a 6V6 to a 6L6 in the same brand. Example: when I was selecting tubes for my SFVR I looked at the charts and decided JJs were the way to go for what I wanted but when I developed a microphonic EL34 tube in my Rivera I suspected I'd still find JJ to be the best fit but it turned out the Tung Sols were rated higher in the categories that were important to me so I bought them and I am quite happy with them. If I can remember where I found those charts I'll post them for you.

I can't find the chart I used a couple years back. It was really good. I did find a semi-useful sales page at a tube vendor's web site. Here's the link.

Great info.

I like the JJ ECC83S for balanced clear tone. They are realy cheap.

I might be wrong or it may just be one of those things, but I hear that Sovtek are good tube because they are made in Russia and Russia still has a lot of important technology that still runs off Tube Technology, making them made to a higher standard.
I could be wrong and Im sure some might chime in on that but its just a rumor of course.

I agree morbe, the Sovtek tubes are some of my favorites, they are very rugged, well built tubes. I would say that the Russian tubes are second only to the US made tubes. :)

anyone take a liking to New Svensorlana 12ax7? (you know you liked that)
im using one, and so far i think i'm digging it.
sovtek WC's actually ain't as bad as people say, but im slowly starting to feel that there may be some truth in the hype.
tung sol is a good one, but would it be accurate to say that i feel like i've had the same results from other tubes? as if to say they're being played up a bit too much. i know, its all subjective...

i'm still undecided on favorite 12ax7 in a pro jr (my only tube amp, whether thats a deficiency or not), but i have several working (when last used) tubes available and im just gonna chill with that. i get tired of tinkering.

i could probably say that JJ's reign king for affordable el84's
