I am trying to trace the source of some hum. Here's the deal and all the variables:

I play a vintage kay jazz II through a vintage 60s deluxe reverb amp, and i'm getting quite a great deal of hum in my practice space.

1. the amp doesn't hum when its on but nothing is plugged into it. the amp doesn't hum when a guitar with humbuckers is plugged in. only hums with this guitar and other single coils.

2. the guitar has all new electronics, and shielded wiring, though it has original pickups. the guitar does not hum when plugged into a 70s fender twin reverb in the same room. the guitar does not hum when plugged into the deluxe reverb in a more "sterile" or "neutral" environment like the guitar repair shop (of course!). sometimes i have hum at shows, sometimes not.

3. i bought a furman power conditioner to take all interference out of the line, but it didn't help my guitar and amp situation. it helped the PA... which makes me think the guitar itself is picking up some airborne interference through the pickups.

4. if that's the case, why doesn't it pick up that same interference when played through the twin reverb? anybody have any idea what's going on here?

thanks so much, i'm about to lose my mind....

Have you tried moving around to various parts of the room to see if the hum increases/decreases? I'm assuming same guitar cable is used throughout all of the various scenarios?

hi, thanks for responding. yeah, tried all kinds of cables and all the different outlets.... but its a pretty small room, so the difference isn't too great by moving things around. i can reduce it by angling the guitar in certain directions, but it's hard to remain standing in that one position the entire time.
forgot to mention. powerlines run all along behind my house. the room is at the back of the house. could this be it? am i screwed? should i paint my room with shielding paint or just give up?
thanks!

I feel for a magnetic interference (of transformers for instance) with your single coils on your guitar due to vicinity (proximity ?).
To understand this, put your guitare parallele to the amp and change distance: what happens ?
Chose a distance where the hum is important and turn slowly horizontaly your guitare up to 90° (and 180°) to the amp. Do you notice less hum in a certain position ?
With the same distance turn slowly your guitare vertically (360°). Do you notice less hum in certain position?
BTW, what king of lamp do you have (fluerescent ...) ?

You have typical 60 cycle hum from your single coils. A problem that's plagued all of us Strat and Tele players since thier inception. Solutions: Use pickup positions 2 and 4(combination neck/middle and middle/bridge) or buy some noiseless single coils or just tolerate it like most of us.
