Hello,

My fairly new Fender Pro Junior III amplifier has a great tone to it stock from factory, came with GT tubes in it, very nice.
My doubt is about the volume knob, it produces a loud rispy scratches when I turn it both ways, sounds like a old vinil record.
As it is very new, about a month old, its on its warranty, but since I live in Brazil and bought it on musiciansfriends, I have no way to apply the warranty.
Can any of you amp expert guys give me a tip to correct this knob issue ? Thanks!

Hi joaokorb,

Just rotate the knob back and forth very quickly, many times, and keep doing it until the scratchiness disappears, it may take a few minutes of rotating. Be careful not to be too forceful with the knob, you're just cleaning the pot by rotating it. If doing this doesn't get rid of the noise, you may have to send it back for warranty repair (they'll probably just replace the pot). You may be able to get Fender to send you a new pot for free (warranty), if you want to change it yourself. Of course replacing the pot yourself may void the warranty.

Just a bit of a 'heads up' (or FYI) -
If you try 'cleaning' the pot - get a cleaner with 'lubricant' in it.
Spray electrical contact cleaner will clean it - but it will also remove any lubricant that was supposed to be in it. Then it will wear out in a short time.

I´ve tried shimmilou method last night, for about 20 minutes with the amp powered off. But got no positive results.

Heres a youtube video so you guys can see and hear my problem with more detail.

Can you guys recommend me a brand of a cleaner/lubricant so I can try spraying the volume pot ?

It's a new amp, send it back and make Fender pay return shipping. Seems like anymore the consumer has to be the troubleshooter and amp tech for new equipment. We need to start demanding better components in these amps.

The thing is that I´ve bought it at MusiciansFriend and took it to Brazil. If I put it on mail to Fender when it comes back I´ll be charged for taxes here in Brazil over the amp price.
Fender Brazil authorized dealer called (Pride Music) wont accept my warranty since I didnt bought the amp thought them.
Thats why I asked for help on the lounge, since I trust better myself on solving this issue then the techs here in Brazil.
Yes, its sad that a new amp came with that kinda issue, but besides the volume knob problem, the amp sounds amazing.

The store doesn't fix the amp, Fender or an authorized service center should. See what Fender says about it.

Sympathise with the warranty/return issues. Personally, for the problem you have, I'd get a can of De-oxitt or (my personal fave) Servisol Super 10 switch cleaning lubricant. There's always a can of this stuff in my toolbox and it's never let me down - amp and instrument pots and switches instantly cleaned.

Find it here (sales): uk@crcind.com
Also, www.ambersil.com
