I was thinking of hooking up my BJ to a 8ohm 412 cab. It it safe or can I do harm to the amp?

As BJ has been designed for 8 Ohms, since you are respecting this it's OK. 8)
However a small amp on big speakers is not the ideal configuration.

Yes, perfectly safe as long as the wattage rating of the speakers is higher than the 15 watt output of the amp. After you try it, let us know what your thoughts are.

I've typically tended to stay away from 412 cabs as I find them to usually be just a little muddier than a 212 which is my preference. I never need the SPLs of a 412 anymore and I find they don't begin to come into their own until the SPLs border on ear-plugs-only territory.

For the BJ I think I'd just go with a 112 cab that is nice and large in terms of measured internal volume, prolly closed back and loaded with a decent speaker. Something in the neighborhood of 1.75 to 2 cubic feet. Even 1.5 would make a drastic improvement. The BJ's cabinet is prolly about 0.8 to 0.9 cubic feet and is one of the reasons for it's tonal limitations.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to give it a try. A friend is selling me his Crate 412 cab for $25, not the greatest but for that price I'll take it. I plan to run my GK250ml through it but I figured why not try the BJ. Thanks again and I'll let you know how it sounds when I get it.

Just depends on what's loaded in the cab. There's nothing wrong with running small low wattage amps into big cabs. I've done it plenty of times. I've run 5 watt amps into 4x12 cabs. The impedance is fine. It's a lot to jug around. On my Egnater I run two 112 cabs. I agree with BMW though, a nice 112 cab or a 2x10 cab would be nice. Anything's better than the tiny Blues Jr cab.

I haven't gotten around to running my Blues Jr. through either of my 4-12 cabs yet but routinely have run my little 5 W Paul amp through a Marshall 1960 cab with no ill affects only a great sound.

It's kind of a curiosity that one of the BJs best features is also one of its worst. The small light weight cabinet is very portable and is one of the reasons I bought mine for ease of transport to small jams and it's now one of the reasons I want to get rid of it for lack of serious tone. Even with the BillM mods.

I agree with BMW, my Blues Jr. is a great sounding amp with a 112 Closed back cab. Sort of defeats the purpose of a combo though. Wish mine was just a head. I don't understand why Fender doesn't offer it as a head. The combo cab is just too small to get a decent sound. That's just my opinion.

Something like this works out pretty good (and looks marvelous!)

I just bought a Seismic Audio Luke-2x12TR birch ply speaker cab and stuck two 16ohm Eminence Texas Heats in it for my Blues Deluxe and Blues Junior. Pretty good tone with all three speakers going. The Blues Deluxe still has the stock speaker and I have a Eminence Cannibas Rex in the Blues Junior.

I have been thinking of getting a Seismic Luke-1x12V that is a large 1 x 12 cab, but not to large. I have some 8 ohm Eminence Texas Heats so I might try one of those first to check the sound of the Blues Junior with that setup before I decide on what speaker to put in it.

I hope I am not straining the Blues Junior to much. I just jumped a lead from the internal speaker with some 12 gauge speaker wire to a Mojo 1/4" female jack and hook that to the ext. cab with a 12 gauge speaker patch cable. I measured the resistance and it was around 3.8 ohms when hooked up to the ext.cab.

Hi majorbytes,

The BJr can handle 4 ohm speaker load just fine. Make sure that you have good connections. I was also considering a Texas Heat for my BJr or for my extension cabinet, so I would be interested to hear your thoughts about how it sounds in/with your BJr. :)

One idea I have been toying with my Blues Junior is getting a larger tweed cabinet from The Vintage Sound and having them cut it out for the Blues Junior. I can do this for the price it would cost to get another extension cab and load it with speakers. I could still have a grab and go solution, which I do like and give the Blues Junior more breathing room.

I like the cabinet size of my Blues Deluxe, so I would get one that was close to those dimensions. They also have head cabinets, so I could just put the Blues Junior in one of those and use an extension cab, but loose the grab and go functionality.
