i am curious to know if i plug a cab into the external speaker jack of a 1965 twin reverb reissue...will it cancel out the internal speaker or will it run the cab in addition to the internal speaker?

my next question is...what would the appropriate ohm rating for an additional cabinet with the 1965 twin reverb reissue?

MANY THANKS!!

Hi whenindoubtdanceout,

When using a speaker cab plugged into the external jack, the internal speakers will still work, both the external and internal speakers will work at the same time. A 4 ohm, or 8 ohm, or even 16 ohm external speaker cab, will work just fine with your amp. You can even unplug the internal speakers from the main speaker jack and use that jack for an external cab if you want, but you must have some speaker plugged into the main speaker jack, either with or without the external speakers.

With only the internal speakers connected, the speaker load is 4 ohms. With an external 4 ohm cab connected with the internal 4 ohm speakers, the total speaker load will be 2 ohms. With an external 8 ohm cab connected with the internal 4 ohm speakers, the total speaker load will be 2.6 ohms. With an external 16 ohm cab connected with the internal 4 ohm speakers, the total speaker load will be 3.2 ohms.

The amp will be the most efficient with a 4 ohm speaker load (most power output), but will operate safely with a lower or higher ohm speaker load. Some speaker combinations will sound better than others.

+1 to shimmilou's comments.

I frequently run my TRRI with an 8-ohm Dual Showman cab connected to the external speaker jack. A pair of 12's with two 15's makes for some serious loud. Just be certain that your external speakers are up to the task.
