I was at the music store today playing just about every reissue Fender there is: Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, Bassman LTD, Custom Vibrolux, 65 Twin Reverb (and a Vox AC15, yuk! Terrible hard edged sound with awful reverb).

I have to say that most of the reissues don't sound as great as I would like them to, I have issues with the treble of almost every single one of them. They are too piercing and somewhat harsh to my ears. It seems that there is a reason for the high cost of vintage models after all.

The Vibrolux was a disaster with the harshest sound and a permanent noise level that rivals a beach with rolling waves!

The Deluxe Reverb and the Super Reverb sounds almost identical with the same slightly piercing highs. The DDRI has too little bass for my taste.

The Bassman is a great growling monster, I love the rude bottom end and the midrange honk of it but I don't enjoy the slitghtly metallic treble and it can't play clean at band levels. It also went into a serious tube rattle several times, something I also have experienced on the new Super-Sonic 22.

Much to my surprice I ended up playing the Twin Reverb and liking it a lot. It also has a lot of treble but it's 'another kind of treble' somehow and it is more balanced against the full and mellow Fender clean. It took all my pedals really great (Zendrive, T-Rex Alberta and STL Tube Screamer), especially the Alberta sounded royal with my Texas Specials equipped Highway 1 Strat.

After leaving the shop I tried a used Bruno Cowtipper 22 and THAT amp was everything that my Deluxe Reverb was not: Completely smooth&soft with silky highs, full lows and well balanced mids. It had the most incredible reverb too and the transition from clean to overdriven was gradual and perfectly smooth. It had that true feeling of quality and nothing was buzzing or out of place. I am very tempted to buy it but the cost used was equal to a brand new Twin Reverb and I am not sure that it is loud enough to play clean at band levels.

Your Ears May Vary...

best regards

Jim

I'm currently looking into the Twin Reverb (because, after all, it's a twin ). One thing you may want to note is that it has a middle control if comparing it to the Deluxe Reverb.

Another thing to consider: all new speakers require about 20 hours of use before they sound their best. Thus, highs may be perceived as "raspy" or "ice-picky" until then.

As well, the Eminence OEM speaker isn't generally the best-sounding speaker for the re-issue amps. Their generic tone does nothing particularly well.

I agree Arjay,my deluxe reverb sounded harsh at first, but once it was broken in it sounded great. My drri has a jensen in it.I had a eminence in a blues deluxe and it sounded bad. The blues deluxe has since been "rehomed".

What Arjay and Budglo said!! 8)

I'm a fairly new owner (2 months) of a DRRI and it has the stock Jensen speaker in it. Ice-picky!!!! You bet! I think I could have taken out a few wine glasses a la Memorex Commercial, if you're old enough to remember that one. But, it has mellowed in the last month considerably!

I may change it out eventually but I'm listening to sound files of all types/brands of speakers to find one. mp3 sound bites aren't really that great but it'll give me an idea. Once I think I know what I want, I'll ask folks in this Forum for their opinion too.

So whatever you purchase just be aware the sound will change as you use it till it breaks-in.
Enjoy!

Arjay is totally right. Not to mention that Fender habitually biases their amps on the cool side to improve tube reliability.

And really, the SRRI is probably the best sounding amp I've ever heard. Yeah, it's got high end - turn down the treble knob. Not to mention don't demo them with the speakers aimed right at your head. There's a reason Weber makes the "beam blocker".

As for the Custom Vibrolux - it's not a reissue. And the noise hiss is just part of that amp's design. I have one and piercing highs are not what I would use to describe its rich tone.

My vote on best modern FENDER amp being DRRI.
For its portability and sound- !!!
but just a point to bring up @@@@
not all brand NEW off the shelf DRRI's sound the same.
yes, that is what I said.
i found this out when i recently went to the music store and they had 3 new DRRI's and I played all 3. I always do this when i purchase something even IF it doesn't seem to make sense. I can understand when I went to buy my Taylor, seeing that they are all wood instruments, not factory line amps. Anyways I was pretty suprised how diff these 3 DRRI's sounded. WHOA! same C12K's, same tubes ( i checked even preamp tubes), same settings in the same temperature room ! Same geetar.... playing same licks without adjusting treble control on guitar....
----no wonder I was let down a few months back when i went to try one out after i realized how great these amps can be, I was completely confused when i left that day thinking wow, DRRI's are not as great as they say..!? After months of thinking, they have to be at least good amps or there would be NO hype?!?! So, I thought maybe I played a lemon or just a lime...I need to give these amps another shot...

I will say that 2 out of the 3 were great sounding, and yes 1 of them freaked me out !
It had biggg bottom BASS, the highs were purrfect. It dirtied up and immediately made me grin - and yes, it has a new home, my home. I am completely aware of the phenomenon that we guitarsist have happen to us occasionally, where the same pedal setup, or same whatever sounds diff on a diff day in the SAME room. But this all went down at the same time. i could really A/B them on the same circuit.
Now I can completely understand when forums discussing mods on DRRI's and some will say that the amp is perfect stock the way it is,,, cause some are.
just a lil' story about my trip.......
