i'm looking for some advice on putting early breakup power tubes in my amp(bdri). i'm switching out the pickups in my epi les paul to some with a vintage output. just wondering if this would break up better with the guitars volume and provide the overdrive when the volume is all the way up. i guess in short is this going to give me good clean and overdrive at a lower amp volume level? i'm not going to get into tubes or pickup opinion i'm looking for some experienced advice.

No I don't think those new pickups won't get your power tubes to overdrive sooner. Generally speaking, "vintage output" pickups have a lower output and will not drive the tubes harder into clipping as opposed to hotter or more "modern output" pickups. Here is a helpful article: http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Picku ... uation.htm See if you can find some specs on your new pickup and compare it to your old one to get an idea of how much output will change. And remember you guitar signal hits the preamp tubes first so they will overdrive before your power tubes. You have to crank a BDRI pretty loud to get the power tubes cookin'.

To get power tubes that break up earlier (but it will still be LOUD for a BDRI), I suggest contacting Eurotubes.com and tell them your amp and the sound you are looking for. Or get Groove Tubes 6L6 with a #1 - #3 rating. Then bias your BDRI when you get the new power tubes. If you don't know how to bias an amp, let a professional do it.

thanks for the responce, i decided to get some tubes with a 1-3 breakup. i feel that they will work for me. the amp is a clean amp as it is. i run mine on normal channel with a compressor in the loop and the amp cranked to 12. it gets a nice breakup with this set up with a les paul. i use the compressor to control the amps volume and it works well, i just wanted to use vintage style pups instead of the ones that came with the guitar. they work well but never get clean until you turn them down almost to 2 (guitar volume). i like my breakup to start at 5 or 6 from the guitar. i went with seymour duncan aph-1n and 1b.
