I have read the manual back and forth and search the internet far and wide. I have a first generation Hot Rod, and not that it lacks any power or tone, but I was searching craigslist like I always do and saw an 8 Ohm, 15 inch bass cab for sale pretty cheap. Really cheap actually. And as every body knows searching new tone can be like searching for the holy grail. I know by now alot of you are already know the answer Im going to ask. So here it goes: Impedence wise it's a match! There is no issues there. But it is a bass cab meant for lower sounds and lower tones. If I get this and connect my HRD to it. Will I get a beefier sound or will it just sound like I wasted my hard earned money?

You can experiment with any 8 ohm speaker, just mind the output... ie: dont use less than a 40 watt rating...

Can't you take your amp with you and try it out?

+1

That's what I'd do.

Thanks for the replies. I have decided not to get the cab. I would take my amp to try it. But I always tend to think that it sounds great until a few weeks down the road then I decided that its not the sound im looking for. I think I will just keep the HRD as is. Sorry Guys Im just a tone Junkie.

Why then ... all the more reason to have picked up that interesting cabinet. Sounds to me like an experiment that would likely have paid it's own way if you didn't like it. In other words, if you got it for a fair price you could also sell it for that same fair price thereby getting your money back out of it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Excellent BMW-KTM, I do the same with a lot of gear, buy it, try it, then resell. I get to enjoy a lot of experiences that way, nearly all of them good to great. Weren't there a couple of Fender amps that came with, or were used with 15 inch speakers? Maybe a Bassman and .... :?:

morbe,

I have used my HRDlx with an external 12 in Celestion, and it has a much warmer tone, much more punchy with great low end, but at the expense of highs on a clean sound. The drive sound was better with the external cab, and the highs were better without the back panel on the cab, but still very warm. I think that originally, the Bassman was a bass amp, but guitar players found that it was great for them also. The sound that you get will depend on the speaker and cab, but if it is "really cheap", I would want to be sure of the quality. I wouldn't want to hook up something cheap to my amp and risk damage to the amp. If it is a good quality brand, and if it's in good shape and you can get a good deal, why not?

I can connect the HR to any cab as long as its 8 ohm rights. So I can run 4x12 cab to it?
I still might get that bass cab though. Im looking for it right now. It was a fender bass 1x15 cab Im trying to get the model number of it.

Yes, any cabinet that is 8 ohms will be a good impedance match. You can actually use a 4 ohm or 16 ohm cabinet also, but the amp will be the most efficient (produce the most power), with a matched impedance. You can also unplug the internal speaker and plug in the external cab into that jack, to use the external by itself. However you connect the speakers, you must have something plugged into the internal speaker's jack, you can not use only the external speaker jack by itself. Using the internal 8 ohm speaker with and external 8 ohm cab will be a total speaker impedance of 4 ohms, and the switching speaker jacks on the amp select the 4 or 8 ohm impedance depending on whether you use an external cab or not. The impedance matching is only about efficiency, nothing more. You won't do any damage by using other than a matched impedance. So, really you can try just about any cab that you want, some will sound better than others. Make sure to put the amp in standby, or turn it off before plugging in or unplugging speakers. :)

I have another question has I was reading through the owners manual for the HRD. You can run one Fender HRD to another by using the Power amp in. you you can connect two HRD's together in a chain. But doesnt this basicaly turn the slaved amp into a powered cabinet? Every thing will be dead on the second amp but the reverb control. Wouldnt it be better and more efficient to get a A-B-Y box on plug into each one and each amp will become its own entity?

Either way will be fine, there is no right way. Use instrument cable (guitar cable) for the connections. Definitely NEVER connect the speaker outputs to the input of another amp.

If you use the "Preamp Out" from the first amp, to the "Power Amp In" on the second amp, the preamp section will be bypassed on the second amp, using only it's PI and output tubes. The volume and tone controls will be disabled on the second amp. And the reverb and presence will still work on the second amp. The second amp will be a slave to the first, with the volume/tone of the second amp being controlled by the first amp. Connecting like this is easiest, only need one extra cable.

If you use the ABY switch or stereo effects pedal (a pedal with two outputs), to the input jacks of both amps, then both amps preamp sections will work at the same time. The volume and tone controls will work independently on each amp, giving more control of the tone/volume for each amp.

A third option would be to plug your guitar into input 1 on the first amp, then connect input 2 on the first amp to input 1 or 2 on the second amp. This is similar to the ABY connection, but the signal to the second amp will be attenuated (slightly lower) this way for a little different sound.

Try all three and see how you like it. I have used two amps together, using either an ABY switch, or a stereo pedal, as I like to adjust the volume on each amp independently. Wonderful sound using two amps together like this. :)

Im going for Option two only because I used to do it with a couple of solid states amps to get a fuller sound.
