Hey guys, so I came across a 2006 HRD for $400, I play on a '72 telecaster deluxe, and I play alternative suff along the lines of Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182, and have been getting into A Day to Remember. What do you think of this amp? Would you recommened it? How is the best way to get the distortion for the bands above? Is an '06 model too old to be reliable?

ANYTHING on the topic would be great, even other amp recommendations.

Thank you guys so much!

I really like my HRD, but 400 bills is to much to pay... Id start at 200 and go from there. There are some issues with these amps that some folks have had, I have not had any issues, my amp is 2 yrs old. The best advise, is for you to test drive with your guitar, and then you decide if the sound is right for you. Good luck, send pics if you do the deal!

I also like my HRDlx, it is over 13 years old. The HRDlx is much better on the clean channel, sounds wonderful. If you want distortion or driven sound with this amp, it is best to use pedals on the clean channel, as the drive channel is lacking. I have only had minor issues with mine, a broken circuit trace, affecting the channel switching, which I could have caused when I took it apart to modify it, and leaking power supply caps which I recently changed before they became a problem. As bill948 pointed out, there can be issues that you might have to address, mostly possible poor solder joints, problems common to many modern amps. I agree, try it before you buy, if possible. I went through my amp when I bought it, and touched up the solder joints before they could become a problem. :)

I'd pass on that. $400 is way too much. The market is flooded with them too. A 2006 shouldn't be more than $275- $300 i real clean shape. You can get one less than a year old for not much more. Around $450-475 tops. I think the HRDlx is a crap shoot. Mine was a reliability nightmare and also a 2006 model, shimmilou's is 15 years old. I wouldn't get one without getting at least a years worth of warranty. The warranty is transferable. Mine was too much work to keep. So I sold it with 7 months worth of warranty on it. It spent most of it's life either in the closet or in the shop. Only you can decide on how lucky you feel.

I had one I got in a trade, I didn't have much in it so I played through it...FOR ONE REHEARSAL....Absolutely one of the biggest, toneless, lifeless, vibrating, rattling, whistling pieces of junk I've ever had the displeasure of plugging into. It had a brick that resembled a speaker inside of it, but there is no way it could have been a speaker unless the tone they were after resembled rubber coated cardboard. Whoever designed the "Blowed up a_s and MORE Blowed up a_s channel needs to go back to driving a tow truck or whatever it is they did as a previous job. I'd use a Peavey Bandit 100 to 1 over any of the HR amps. Don't even bother wasting your money on it. In reality the amp SHOULD sell for about 20 bucks with a 300 dollar rebate for all the junk you're gonna fix.

Bottling up such emotional issues is a sure road to high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and a myriad of other potentially-mortal maladies, randini......

Tell us how you really feel!

Have had my HRD for a year and love it. For variety over Christmas I bought a Line6/Bogner tube amp with modeling. Hated it, took it back. Got a Peavey Vypyr Tube 60 with modeling. Sounds great for hard rock and metal, but no feel for blues. I'm taking it back. Nothing has matched my HRD. I can play blues, classic rock, hard rock, metal (with the right pedal).

...I guess I was a little "harsh" on it.....you can buy decent covers for them though. That way no one can see what you're carrying into the repair shop or the nearest GC to get 100 dollars out of it when you trade it in for a case of strings and a new super wizzbang string winder.

ROTFL!!
Oh man perfect sentiment!

 You got me drinking a can of pepsi, came out the nose and onto the keyboard.

Yep some people do love them, they are cheap for tube amps and work sort of.
The rest have discovered the shortest route to the repair shop, or that they are a one trick tone pony.

Actually I bet the people that love them the most are the repair shops they help keep in business!

Friends don't recommend HotRod's to friends!

Funny stuff. You guys thought I was hard on the HRD series?
If all you've ever played was a lower end tube or SS amp and stepped up from something really bad, of course the HRD series amps will be the greatest thing on the planet. Arjay, myself and other geezers came from the land of real Blackface/Silverface/Tweed/Brownface hand-built Fender amps so we have a pretty good point of reference. We played and gigged with them when they were new, not vintage.
Part of our dislike is not just the way they sound, but more the way they were designed and built. The Real deal Fender amps died when Leo retired and then died. IMO, FMIC traded amp designs that lasted for decades and more for disposable amps and a higher profit. It's a shame. Many of you will never the real Fender sound. And no, for all you Blues Jr and Pro Jr. owners, what many of us consider the "Classic Fender Sound" does not come from EL84 power tubes. You can like the amp all you want and that's great, but it's not "Classic" anything. The name on the amp does not make it classic. Flame suit on.

Hey 63, your HRD opinions are legendary... No reason for a flame suit, hell, its just what you like or don't. I happen to like mine, and thats all that counts for me. I took you advise and tried the eggbeaters... and thought they were ok. I just couldn't make them work for me. Anyway, different opinions make the world go round, and that makes for great alternative tunings :D
