Just FYI - replaced stock Groove Tube 6L6GC tubes with SED Winged C tubes from http://thetubestore.com/6l6gc.html. With the 12AT7 in the V1, I can get up to 4 on input 2 before break up, just over 3 on input 1. Amp is more articulate, smoother drive in clean channel when pushed- still not too fussy on the drive channel - but the amp has improved tone and cleaner. Set the bias at 70 mV. Expensive tubes but very well rated for Fender amps. As good as it gets maybe?

Now to rid me of the low frequency chassis vibration!!!!

If they are a true 6L6GC (and not a relabled 5881), the Winged C tubes could be run hotter. I run my JJ 6L6GCs in my BDRI at 83 mV which works out to be about 36 mA plate current. You need to know your plate voltage to be sure you are sfae, but 70mV at the Fender test point is still pretty cold.

Try the 12AT7 in V2. That is how my JJ tubes are set up: 12AX7 in V1 and V3, 12AT7 in V2. Very sweet Blues sound.

Thx...the Tube Store advised up to 85 mV @ test point is no issue with SED tubes - easily handle it - advised that too cold is a tone killer. May try it and 12AT7 in V2. JJ Ruby 12AX7 supposedly warmer than EH12AX7 as well...may play around a bit more...

hey so just to sidetrack and go back to dating a fender amp...
so we've established this deville i have here does not have a bias pot and it's made in the USA. does that for sure mean that an FH on the quality sticker means 1995?

the chart on this page stops at 1999. can we assume that K would mean 2000 and so forth?
would F have been resued by now since 1995?

cheers

No, Z would be 2015, no need to reuse letters until then.

FYI - The beast is tamed. Thanks all for the comments.

Just tried 12AY7 in V1 (no change with 12AX7 in V2 and 12AT7 in V3).

Bias at 73 mV - turned down as he new winged C SED tubes were smelling - epoxy odour from bottle paint or encasement- mostly dissipated now and will turn it up to 80 mV...

The characteristics of the amp changed dramatically - with the 12AY7. The volume is suppressed - ears do not bleed at 5 or 6... gain is suppressed dramatically as expected. I can play this in my rec-room without causing structural damage!

Surely not for everyone but a much more clean tone suitable for "mellow" blues/jazz/country, which is my preference. Musician friend considered it to sound closer to a Bassman... Bill M (Bill M Mods for Blues Jr fame) recommended this as well, if I recall.

So - this amp can be tamed with minor expense. One aspect to be considered is the speaker - looking for more articulate response - stock Fender Eminence pretty mushy bottom end...played around with pre-amp but may like to try another speaker.

Recommendations?
