Dear all,

I have had a blued jr for almost 2 years now and I have been more than happy with it apart from the fact that the amp with the stock fender speaker did not like OD pedals. (it made a "fizzy" sound usually when the pedals' tone pot was set high)
So I replaced the stock with the Jensen speaker (NOS edition) which improved the amp performance on its own but still did not like pedals. (Strange 'cause this guy Steviesnacks has done a bunch of OD pedal reviews with the NOS blues jr and they all sounded ok.)
The pedals I am running are a TS9, a zendrive 2, a Suhr riot and recently a CM Plexitone.
A few days ago I replaced the speaker with a V30 and although it has not broken in yet, the amp seems to love all pedals apart from the plexitone (no "fizzy'' tone with all the other pedals).

By fizzy I mean a high treble distortion which sounds unnatural and is present at the higher note registers. I am not a native English speaker so please excuse my impotence in explaining exactly what I mean..

Anyway, I have read in several forums that the plexitone works better with brit-voiced amps BUT I have seen cases (youtube) where the pedal sounded great with a blues junior and other non brit-voiced amps..
I did the billm fix to eliminate any phase shifter problem and also lowered my strat PUs to eliminate any oscillation due to PUs magnetic pull on the strings.
Still, as I add gain or tone to the plexitone the problem appears.
I get around it by lowering the treble in the amp EQ but that's not the sound that I am after...
Could there be any issues with microphonic tubes or something that appears only when I am using the particular pedal?
I will check the pedal with some other amp next week but I was wondering if there is a fix to that (given that the pedal is ok).

Sorry for the long thread.

All the best!!!

Hi Catthan,

Maybe you are right, let the speaker break-in first. Have you tried an external speaker cabinet with the BJr? I used an external 1x12 cabinet with Celestion speaker. The distortion was much smoother with the external cab, not as much treble. :)

Hi shimmilou
thanks for your prompt reply.

Unfortunately I have limited access to gear but I am glad to hear that there could be a fix to it. I will have to try though if nothing improves.
I gave it another try at higher volumes while being very careful with all settings and managed to get a sweet spot. not completely satisfied but at least the gear set up is not useless.
So you really think that the not broken-in speaker could have a greater effect to the particular pedal?
I am not doubting, I just don't know.

Thanks again.

All the best

Well, most speakers do need a break-in period before they are at their best, and it would be a good idea to let it, before trying other things. Maybe some others here on the forum can give their experiences too. You did note that the speaker already worked better with the other pedals. It sounds like you just might be able to dial in your perfect sound after trying all of the knobs and fat switch combinations to find your "sweet spot". :)

Hi to all again.

The speaker sounds better and better every day but still the amp doesn't like my CM plexitone..

here is a short clip I recorded so you can hear what I am talking about.

http://www.mediafire.com/?2f47508nkbddcn2

It plays with itunes.
if you listen to it loud enough you will notice the strange harmonics.
If you have any idea why this is happening please post your answers.

All the best!
