I'm working on learning some classic surf guitar songs and I need to get that surf sound but not spend a boatload of $$. I don't gig -- just practice and play here at home. So, I'm considering a Superchamp XD, combined with a Boss FRV-1 Reverb pedal. Seems like that'll give me a tube amp kinda sound with the reverb needed to capture the surf sound. Anyone tried this combo or have thoughts on this?

FYI -- for now, I'll be playing surf stuff with my Classic Players '50s Strat. And, I'm working on modding a Sunfire Orange Flake MIM Strat to also use for surf music...

I think thats a great amp for what you want to do... Save your money on the pedal until you see if the onboard effects will fill the bill. I understand that the effects this amp have are really good.

Good Luck, and surf on!

I have a SCXD and have recorded and gigged with it for the last year. I love it! I like the DSP effects on it and use no pedals. Some folks here don't like them but I would say try it out for yourself and if you like it get it. Don't let other people influence your purchase. One other thing...alot of guys will but it and then mod it with a different speaker right away. My advice is don't do that until you have had the chance to break in the speaker. Once it is broken in and depending on your style and taste...great sounding!

oldguy101: I have both a DRRI and a SCXD (and no real measuareable talent). I am also honorary oldguy102. I play only at home, and have been learning Pipeline by the Ventures. Tried it just now on both amps, and you will NOT need that Reverb pedal. Plenty is on tap on the SCXD "spring" setting and an F/X Level of 10 (compares well with the DRRI). If you get pedals, lots of folks have had good experiences with the SCXD accepting them. I have only tried a Bad Monkey, which worked very well (esp Voice eight).

And airbornestrat is correct, the speaker is really perfect on this amp. It looks wimpy, but it really meshes with the tones. I would save your money on that too.

If you are just dying to spend money on guit gear (and aren't we all), spend $20 on these tremolo springs. I think they just make the Strat come alive (and the sustain is much improved):

All you need now is "a '34 wagon" and a blue Pendleton shirt.

I've played "surf" on alot of different gear.
The gear you described should work great!
