Hey guys!

Just got my brand new SS22! I had a Custom Vibrolux reverb before that, but wanted a 2 channel low-watt combo with FX-loop. After returning a Egnater Rebel 30 combo that sounded really good but had a problem with the channel switching, I decided to go for the Super Sonic 22 to get that classic Fender clean-sound which the Egnater does not offer.

This is an awesome sounding amp right out of the box, except that the powertubes rattled a higher volumes so I replaced them with the new TAD 6V6's and also upgraded the 12Ax7's....Wow!

Gonna play my first show with it on Saturday....

Great job, Fender!

Definitively, it seems a good choice between price, sound, power ... Hoping reliability also. 8) 8) 8)

@fendersonic:

Could you please check the reverb on your Super Sonic 22!?

If you crank it up to full deep level, is there a feedback growing?

And what about the noise with all controls at zero? My Super Sonic is quiet a noise producer without a guitar plugged...

This amp is great in sound an flexibility but I think there are some "starting problems" with the first run of production.

Best regards
Martin

Good luck with the amp. The one I tried didn't sound all that great past 4 or 5 on the volume dial. I have an Egnater Rebel 20 and it's been rock solid. I didn't really like the Rebel 30 as much as the 20. I don't like channel switching amps either. Seems like the more complex the amp the more problems crop up, though I know lots of people with the Rebel 30 and never had any problems at all and gig them pretty hard.

@ stratgod82: No problem with the reverb all the way up or any other problems...seems I got lucky. (Maybe they got rid of the early production flaws, mine is dated Nov 5th 2010.)
As for the noise:
All the tube-amps I really know (CVR, REBEL 30, this one) have no master volume and are relatively noisy on the clean even when not turned up. This one I feel is better than the others I had.
I think swapping preamp-tubes and checking the bias will make it a little more quiet.

@63supro: I do definitely not want to say Egnater does not make great amps.
But I also have the feeling that they did not get it totally right with the 30 W combo as opposed to the Rebel 20, who got rave reviews everywhere. I would like to check out this one too, but there is no store in my country that sells Egnaters.

I think, current amp "mass"-production in general is more varying in quality than it used to. (As with many other products.)

Ok, thx!

Good to hear that there are well working SS22 amps out there. My amp is crap compared to yours :(

I've already tried to change the preamp tubes but that didn't improve the noise thing. When I switch the V4 (the tube after reverb tank in signal path) to a 12AT7 with lower gain then the reverb keeps quiet (working but without feedback) at high levels.

My current Super Sonic 22 is a blonde one which I got from dealer for "rent" because my ordered one in black had issues with the reverb which didn't work at all. I'm still waiting for the new one in black.

I hope it will be one of the recent production...

Best regards
Martin

Martin,

That's bad to hear, I hope you can sort things out...

I re-biased the amp today to Fender specs ( and - thanks to the included schematic and info - even without electrocuting myself... ) 8)
I also started to experiment with different tube combinations. Unfortunately the basic hiss-level did not really decrease as much as I hoped it would. But the tone of the amp improved.

So the hiss is probably due to the design of the amp or maybe because of poor internal parts & soldering points?

But it's not worse than any of the other amps I had and really only an issue if you play quietly in your bedroom. For this I still do have my Fender SCXD

Hey,
The stock tubes are not bad, but I ended up using (for now  ):

V1: TAD 7025WA
V2: TAD 7025 WA
V3: Stock GT (relabeled EH 12AT7) Mainly because it's such a pain in the a** to swap
V4: TAD ECC83
V5: TAD balanced 12AT7
V6,V7: TAD STR 6V6

I had a nice sounding GE JAN 5751 in V1, but unfortunately it adds hum.
Pretty nice also were a Philips JAN 12Ax7 in V1, a JJ Ecc83s in V4 and a JAN 12AT7 in V5.
Might change my mind again soon, this is a never ending thing. (Also I am waiting for a few tubes in the mail.)
I just feel the TADs are a nice compromise of sweetness and flexibility. The NOS stock always seem great for classic stuff but sometimes they feel a little "hard", I don't know how to describe it.

Cheers!

I agree, the Rebel 30 didn't ring my chimes. My HRDlx cured me of all channel switching amps except maybe the Mesa Trans Atlantic. That one is seriously cool. Mesa's been doing it for so long I wouldn't worry about it. That Rebel 20 has been the mutts nuts for me. I can get some really decent headroom with the tube mix at 12:00, watts at 20, master all the way up and the gain just before it breaks up.

I think, current amp "mass"-production in general is more varying in quality than it used to. (As with many other products.)

Hey guys,
Just got home from the show and I must say the SS22 delivered the goods!
The noise (hiss) was not an issue at all.
Wow, I got great sounding cleans (the midboost switch is a very useful feature live for solo parts) & really nice distorted sounds with my 60's Vintage Player Strat with Seymour Duncan SSL1's.
I did hardly ever used my Fulltone. This is the first time my Strat sounded really "right". (Didn't want to stop playing...but we ran out of tunes.)
:D :D :D
