So i've been playing acoustic for about 2 years, but lately i have fallen in love with the blues, so i decided to buy a Strat with a Blues Jr. amp and now that i have them i realize how much i don't know about the electric world. So here are some questions that i hope you can answer.

How do pedals exactly work? and where do i plug one in if i have a blues jr. amp?

What exactly is reverb on an amp?

I know these questions probably seem idiotic to u guys, but hey i have been playing acoustic folk music for awhile and today would be the third day i have ever even touched an electric guitar. So bear with me if you can and try and help me out.

Thanks,
D.L.

With a Blues Junior, you plug your guitar into the pedal, the pedal into the amp's input jack. Pedals may provide distortion, compression, reverb, tremolo, chorus, delay, or some other effects. They're handy if there's a particular sound that you want to emulate that your amp doesn't make, such as the grinding roar of Death Metal (just kidding) or the singing sustain of, say, Carlos Santana, or the deep, pulsating tremolo of an old Duane Eddy or Everly Brothers recording.

For blues tones on a Blues Junior, just turn up the volume, cut back the treble, Fat switch in or out to taste, and use the master volume to adjust your desired loudness.

The reverb in the Blues Junior comes from a set of springs in the "tank" at the bottom of the amp. A portion of the guitar signal is sent to the tank and the reverb control determines how much of it comes back and gets mixed into your signal. 2 or 3 is usually sufficient. Too much reverb can blur your sound, but the right amount gives your tone a sense of dimension, like the echo from inside the box of your acoustic guitar.

An Ibanez Tube Screamer would be a good start.

Santana got a lot of his tone and sustain from a Big Muff.

I don't think Carlos ever used a Big Muff.

In fact, Carlos uses very few pedals, opting mostly for a wah and a delay.

His sound is humbuckers into a Mesa Boogie, and that's what creates that creamed-out sustain. In the old days, it was an SG or an LP, lately it's a PRS.

He also uses a strat, in fact in the "instructional" video on his website he uses a one for "Samba Pa Ti" and plays it through his practice amp which is a Cyber Twin. He also is playing a strat on the Yahoo Music "Nissan Live Sets" video of "In a Silent Way"
