That is very true and unfortunately the Boutique cork-sniffers immediately think a PCB = Rubbish.

Here's the board I just built my 5e3 from, it's made in Memphis - TN - USA, Military Grade tough and solid, plated through eyelet holes and big wide, thick traces that a Chimpanzee with an Arc-Welder would be hard pressed to ruin while soldering over and over.

The sad thing is that the amp built using that board will be poo-poo'd by amp snobs simply because it has that board in it, regardless of the fact it is probably a quieter, better sounding, easier to service and more reliable amp than the one they point to point wired together.

Let the boo-teek cork-sniffers pound sand, Snowy.

That's a quality board regardless!

What good is hand wiring if the hands wiring it have no skill?

+1 Plus I've seen some pretty bad soldering and lead dress in PTP amps too.

Snowy, you did an outstanding job on that kit.

I'll take a well designed and laid out PCB over wires running all of the place any day. Even the best amps may require some amount of adjustment to the wiring dress once you start banging away on them and things start shakin'.

+11

Much easier to service and mod as well.

It is from "The Tube Depot". If you're so inclined as to build stuff and a 5e3 Tweed amp is on your list, I'd highly recommend that kit and they are great guys to deal with. I'm seriously considering building another (Why, Oh why is it so addictive?) and while I am tempted to do a point to point it would really only be to say I'd done a "point to point".

I guess technically the kit is still "Hand Wired" and seeing now how solid the PCB is, I'm thinking of speccing another PCB kit out with some "cherry picked" components to see what that delivers up.

Snowy,
I've ordered things from the Tube Depot and it's in Memphis....are any of the cabinets and other things in the kit made in Memphis also?
One drawback when I order things from them is I have to pay Tenn. sales tax....but your build looked like it had quality parts.

But you save significantly on S&H charges, RS.

Correct Arjay, had not thought of that in something the size of an amp....or even smaller items...that's where I notice the S&H the most.

RS, I'm not sure how much other stuff in the kit is made in Memphis, but I do know the kit does feature primarily US made components for the "Heart and Soul" items such as the PCB, made in US Heyboer Transformers (upgraded to Deluxe Reverb specs) and a Mojotone fingerjointed Pine cab, I'm guessing that's made locally. Now I have replaced the speaker in mine with a Texas Heat which I believe is made in Kentucky.
I primarily just posted about the PCB as a good example of how the boutique amp snobs can be wrong in their judgement of an amps quality based on that one item (sadly, which they almost always do).

I agree with Snowy, the PCB design is why I went with the Tube store 5e3 vs the Eyelet board design from Weber or Marsh.

After seeing your build Snowy, I have no problems in buying a similar amp from Tube Depot.

Well, there is the problem of having the money...but I'm working on that!
