so,old amp sold and shipped, but now im being told by my dads friend that the hotrod deville would be much better for me than the deluxe reverb (which i was pretty much decided on), as the deville has an effects loop.... also, he offered to sell me his for $300, which would leave me enough money to buy the electro harmonix polychorus ive been drooling over for the past month or start saving for a new guitar...

(noob question) what does the effects loop actually do?
im being told the devilles have a lot of technical issues?

any help greatly appreciated

So your Dads friend thinks a Hot Rod Deville would be a better amp for you AND he just happens to be selling one?Gee , what a coincidence. You think he maybe is just trying to sell an amp? These amps are worlds apart, both in tone and power ratings. The deville is really loud and heavy. The drri is smaller and has a much better dynamic range. The reliability is questionable on the HRDV ,not so with the drri.Sounds like you need to think over what your needs really are.

no, he doesnt "just so happen to be" selling the amp, he got a new amp and knows i want the polychorus, and he thinks i might need the effects loop.

once again, my actual question didnt even get answered. -__-

My advice is stick to your guns and get the Deluxe Reverb you wanted, and if you really want the Polychorus save up for that.

Here's some impressions/usage experience of the effects loop.

+ 1,000 I'd skip the HRD for a DRRI. You'll be way better off.

Get the DRRI, otherwise you'll be spending 90% of your playing time chasing down rattles, vibrations and taking the amp to a tech. I've played quite a few of the Hot Rod amps and they ALL have the dreaded death rattle or some microphonic tube problem going on. Not to mention the drive channel is useless and sounds like arse with a switch for more arse. The effects loop should be labeled "TONE SUCK LOOP"...your polychorus will sound just fine going into the front of the DRRI, pros have done it for decades. Eric Johnson has pretty good luck running his TC Chorus into the front of his twins, Robin Trower and Jimi both ran their Univibes into the front of an amp. Joe Bonamassa has pretty good tone running modulation into the front end. The whole effects loop scene is perpetuated by headbangers running effects through a loop so it doesin't "mess with their tone" when actually it's so distorted there is no character to their tone anyways.

Deluxe reverb, Great amp with great reverb and great tremolo. With those two built in effects you may not need a chorus.

It's cheaper to buy the polychorus later than the DRRI later.

polychorus is a chorus, sound filter, flanger, and delay, and can also be used for some awesome and bizarre sounds.... seriously BA pedal, as to be expected from a bigger EH pedal

Off topic, but just had to say love that signature.

On the topic of what does the effects loop do? I believe it allows for your guitar signal to travel through the amp without being affected by any of your pedals that are going through the loop. That way if all effects are disengaged then your guitar signal should be the same as if you didnt have any effects connected at all. Anyone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

So then maybe we should all dream of a better world.... a world where an effects loop can be utilized without it sucking the tone right out of our equipment...

The reason you would go with the HR Deville over the DRRI is that you want the volume and you actually like the sound of the Deville.

Tone is personal. I have heard great tones from DRRI and Hot Rod Devilles and Frontman 65r's.

Try them both and see which one you like best.

i dont recall ever saying i want the volume or sound of the deville, but rather that id be able to get my pedal as well....

regardless, ive decided on the DRRI after reading a few quite bad reviews of the deville.... doesnt seem safe to put $300 into....
