I have a 3yr old Acoustasonic jr. (which I love). It doesn't get a lot of use, but when It does, it seems to build up some noise/distortion, (almost like feed back) which will get louder over several minutes.
If I tap on the top of the cabinet, it quickly stops, as if some electrical connection has been reset or a ground or whatever. Sometimes this happens, sometimes its just fine.

I took it in for service and the tech "resoldered some loose connections" and it was fine for several months, only to start again. Over the weeks the problem gets worse, ie it happens more often and more quickly.

I confess to taking it apart myself to check connections, put everything back together and it was fine for 6 months , but has started again.

Does anyone else have this problem, is it common with this amp, or any ideas would be appreciated. I bought it used so no warranty, and I don't really want the expense of shipping something so heavy back to Fender.

Any help ideas or insight is appreciated. Thanks

Does that have a spring reverb tank?

Hi murrayandrew,

Sounds like possibly some of the bad solder joints were missed, or even a cracked circuit trace. Intermittent problems usually indicate bad solder joints.

No spring reverb, I suspect its a soldering problem as suggested. I'm gonna take it to a different tech who has always done me well in the past. Its too nice an amp not to use, thanks for the help.

I too own an Accoustasonic Jr. (5+yrs) with similar issues. Had it serviced twice for this problem (authorized Fender service), paid total well over $100 and it is still making noise. Crackles, hisses, building to a loud, loud POP! It is now basically useless as I am afraid to turn it on. This amp too will respond to tapping/pounding on the top. Not sure what to do??? Do I take it back 2 hours away to the same guy, only to have it returned in the same condition? Warranty is past. Do I try to work on it myself? Any online tutorials/advice/help would be warmly appreciated. I really like the amp...when it's working. :?

All Fender Acoustasonics are junk with poor parts support. Stay away from them. They are junk. Period.

I tried a couple Acoustasonic series amps after I bought my Martin. I thought they sounded horrible and left the store with a Fishman Loudbox. It just sounded more like an acoustic guitar should. Too many bells and whistles, modeling etc. on the Fenders. Besides, Fender ain't exactly known for their amazing acoustic guitars and lately their amps aren't built all that great either. Their electrics are off the hook. Fishman has been making acoustic pickups ever since I can remember, it just made sense to me. My Fishman Loudbox Mini has been seriously gigged and is quiet as a mouse and so far has been really reliable.

Hello;
My Fender Acoustasonic Jr. DSP is just over 5 years old.
I had the hissing crackling noise problem start about 3 years ago. Static began about 45 minutes after starting to play.Tapping on unit would make the static stop, but it more and more frequent.
I took it back to me dealer, but he told me it "wouldn't act up" for him.
He sent it to a service tech, who also said it "wouldn't act up" for him..5 weeks later he said it still wouldn't, but he'd put in a new circuit board. It was fine for several months, but the static came back in Dec. 2009...I lived with the problem, just gave the unit a tap to stop the static each time. By March 2012, the amp was doing the static thing three-four times an hour. I took the unit back to the dealer shortly before the warranty expired.
I contacted Fender who said they'd never heard of such a problem with that amp.
I just called him, THREE MONTHS later...he says once again the amp "won't act up" for him, or for the service tech he'd sent it to for a while.
I am fed right up. Told him I could never trust the amp again unless they found the problem which he doesn't think exists. He offered to sell the unit for me as a used amp, and offered to sell me a new amp of a different make.
I will never again buy a Fender, I will buy a different make of amp, and unless that dealer gives me a decent discount, it won't be from him.

Yeah, as a working musician there's not much more embarrasing moments than having to punch the top of your amp to get the static and crackling to stop. And of course, always a welcomed addition to a great melodic riff in a quiet room.

Trust me, I spent a couple grand on the Jr. and the SFX II. They are both junk. Never again.

Yup...

I have a 4 yr old Acousticasonica SFX that does the same thing. It frustrated me early on (about 3 yrs ago) to the point of just giving up and having it sit, unused in my room as a cord holder. I recently cleaned it up to try it again, only to experience the same issues.

I feel for you. It is extremely annoying. I've deduced that it is just crappy soldering. My advice...

Buy a new amp. OR get to know a good tech who won't charge you a lot to overhaul the whole thing. OR buy a soldering iron and learn a new hobby...

-Jon

May actually be a new music fad like manipulating the turntable!

First: UNPLUG THE AMP after TURNING THE AMP OFF..
I have an Acoustasonic 30 DSP with this same problem. Just replace the 2 electrolytic Capacitors ( The value is: 2200uF. They're the biggest ones, upper right as you look at the board), but with a higher voltage rating. Fender puts in a 35 volt, you should put in a 50 volt, they will last longer. While you're there, you might as well replace the smaller one sitting next to these two (value escapes me at the moment, but they are all marked. There are also small electrolytic caps all over the board, if you want to replace those with a higher voltage rated cap, go for it, it likely will make a big difference in the amp's performance. It may go south again, but this time you'll know what to do. I've done it twice, and although a pain, it works. No more ocean or scratchy type sounds. "No hitting of amp required". Hope this helps.

Found the problem for me. After many attempts to locate the issue... I would take it apart to troubleshoot and then the noise would go away for a while but would come back again. After doing some endless research I came across a post from a Fender Tech that described "cable issues" with that model. I was able to find the ribbon cable that attaches between boards was available and replaced it. I have not had the problem come back in two years of playing hard.

I want to echo 'Weebles' post that after being frustrated for almost 3 years trying to track down the problem, pulling it apart, re-soldering and checking caps, I made a new ribbon cable and have been playing hours with nary a peep of unwanted hiss, crackle or anything else. Ribbon cables have inherent issues....look them up. They are a cheap and convenient solution to this problem that people should try first.
