Bought a Texas red last week and love it so far but the stock tubes sounded a bit mushy to me so I put in a set of Mesa Boogie 6l6 GC tubes and WOW the amp came alive. MUCH better clean, MUCH more headroom and the drive channel actually sounds like a drive channel now. I played it for 3 hours last night and it did not get overly hot and sounded quiet, sweet and so much better than with the stock tubes.

My question is has anyone else tried the Mesa tubes and is it safe for the amp? They are 6l6GC tubes but seemed fatter than the stock Groove Tubes. I do know they sound about 10X better than stock. The amp sounds better than the Mesa Boogie Express 5:50 2X12 I had for a week in clean and yes, even drive. Also the amp seems to have less hiss now as well.

I have heard a lot of bad things about the HRD amps but this texas red version with the V30 and now new tubes is the best amp I have ever heard and I have tried out a few mesa's, vox, line 6 spider valve, blues deluxe, etc. I was going to swap it for a DRRI before the tube swap but now I am afraid nothing will sound this good!

Probably what happened is that the bias of the groove tubes just matched the new tubes. Unless you changed the bias!

As for people having trouble with the HRD, Fender makes alot of amps and sometimes things go wrong, so there is always some that are going to not work the way they are supposed to. No company is perfect, even if you spend more money on a better amp, it happens!
