Hi
Picked up for little practice amp. Sounds OK but want to replace the speaker.Narrowed it down to these 3:
Weber Speakers Signature Series Ceramic 8S 15 Watt 8" Speaker
Eminence Alpha something 8" (huge magnet and voice coil but will fit. Had a 50 watt musicman with a 300 watt EV in it-loved the sound
Jensen C8R "
No metal-old Rock, R&B , lot of blues.
I read somewhere also that changing the tubes doesn't do much but wanted to ask here.
Thanks Folks
Frank

A speaker change will do the amp good. If you use voce 1 or 2 a different 12ax7 may not make much difference. I tried high gain tungsol and low gain ruby 12at7 and the only real difference was the volume was softer with the low gain and more muddy with the high gain. The fender stock tube was the clearest and more balanced than the others. I'm trying to break in the fender stock speaker to see if it will improve, but when more funds are available I'll try a weber alnico to see what I'm missing.

A speaker would be the better option. The amp is a hybrid and tube changes have very little effect on the tone due to the DSP effect chain.

OK-Makes sense. I ordered a Weber Sig 8. I ordered ceramic after doing some research on the web. It only cost $23. so not a big deal.
Thanks Guys

I disagree on the tube replacement thing. Well, the power tube at least. If you push the amp hard it will start to use the power tube to its capabilities and then a tube change can be heard.

I have a nice old RCA black glass 6V6 in mine and it's much smoother sounding than the Groove Tube tube that was in there stock.

+1

However, a speaker change (hopefully for the better) will provide a more significant alteration to the amp's tone overall -- especially so at less-than-maximum volume levels.

Yeah, I also put a Jensen C8R in mine. Took a fair amount of time to break in but once it did, it's got the classic Fender sound to it!

A wise choice!

It seems like the smaller speakers always require more time for a proper break-in.

Rawk on!

you guys think the sovteks are chosen because there a tad lower in gain and sound good in these amps like the blues Jr? I never keep stock but im going to experiment. I have used NOS's, groove tubes mullard reissues, japanese mullards, tungsols. Dont wanna go too high gain in tubes and loose the fender cleans.

I think the tubes in these are chosen strictly based on cost.

IMO, unless you go to a completely different spec, like a 12AU7 vs a 12AX7, tube rolling produces subtle changes at best, especially in these hybrid amps.

I used the RCA 6V6 I had simply because I had it. You have to give a good A/B listen via recordings to hear the differences, but they are there.
