does the attenuator you use suck your tone at all? I've heard an attenuator will allow you to play at lowed volumes, but does what the volume knob on a guitar does sometimes....sucks away your tone.

Not for me, Again if something "sucks" tone, make an adjustment

Someone else's settings mean NOTHING!! Your guitar, amp, technique and everything else in your signal chain will determine your tone more than another persons dial settings. I always try to develop my own tone, you'll get nothing but aggravation chasing another person's sound or style.

Every destination requires a journey, Enjoy the ride !

Chasing tone is fun and a real learning experience, making mistakes means your still in the game.

Mine started with a single tweed bassman RI about ??? ten or more years ago and I have owned since then $3,000.00 botique amps, bought an entire inventory of NOS tubes from a guy and the story could go on for hours, I'm a good trader/seller and so I've actually made a nice profit on the stuff i didn't hang on to, I had e-bay sales in one year that were over $39,000.00
I even owned a 1940's princeton for a few weeks, it is in Japan in a museum now.
Not bad for an at home jammer with the occasional coffe shop blues jam and such.

If you buy smart you can be a tone junky and make a profit too !

I know own some very fine gear that I promiss you I have zero dollars invested in, yep Zero, in fact I've made serious profit all along the way.

LOL. I don't always want to have SRV's tone. Over the past 16 years, I've done a pretty good job of developing my own sound. Lately I've been jamming on some Early SRV stuff, and just wanted to be able to get some input from people who own a Hot Rod Deville. Just curious, that's all. Using what I already have, I wouldn't mind being able to get a little better sound when I am jamming on tunes like "Texas Flood", "The Sky is Crying", "Pride and Joy", etc. Those are really the only SRV songs I like playing. Also, "Cold Shot" is great, but a clean channel with a little chorus gets me there.

I'm not going out to buy a bunch of gear to sound like anyone else. I did that when I first started playing, and what I found is that I can plug into anyone else's rig, and still sound like myself. Doesn't matter what gear I use. It still sounds like me.

I was actually considering a speaker replacement, but then thought maybe I should buy a new Fender Blues Jr (Tweed version with the Jensen speaker). I've always wanted one. I was actually hoping to get one when I got the Hot Rod Deville instead. 7 years ago when I decided to go to Chiropractic school, I sold my Hot Rod Deluxe because I wanted to liquidate some assets so I'd have some extra cash. My mom felt bad because she knew I wouldn't ask her for any money. About 9 months later my mom and I were at a mall not too far from a guitar center, and I went in there while she was running into a nearby store. She came in when I was jamming on a Blues Jr, and asked me if that was like the one I sold. I said no, mine was like the one next to it (HR Deluxe). Next to it, was a HR Deville. She went back the next day and bought me the Deville and put it under the tree for Christmas. I was so blown away. I almost cried. Apparently she told my dad that we stopped at the guitar center, and he said to her that they should get me a new amp, and she was thinking the same thing. I am so lucky to have parents like that.

Anyway...I love the Deville, but I want something a little smaller. I've since finished with school and am working, so I am thinking, why not the Tweed Blues Jr.? I've listen to some demos, and was thinking the lower wattage will allow it to breakup a little better, and the upgraded speaker will give me what I need.

A chiropractor, eh?

A few more years of humping my JBL-equipped Twin Reverbs and my Dual Showman to and from gigs and I'll likely be needing your services.

What are your office hours?

My wife and I branched out on our own to open our own office. We won't be open for about 6 weeks. But, when we open, we will be open Monday thru Friday from 9-6.

If you are nearby, we'd love to be able to help you. I also offer free transportation on my private jet if you are more than a day's drive from my office (LOL. J/K.)

There is so much truth to this. I've found a combination of gear I'm happy with (30 watt tube combo amp, a few single-coil guitars, and a few pedals), and left it at that. Haven't bought anything but strings in ages, apart from an acoustic, and that was only because I didn't have an acoustic.

There will always be a piece of gear that is better than what you're using. Always. But does that matter? Play the hell out of what you've got.

I've always agreed. I've always bought gear as an addition to what I already have. Rarely do I trade up for something better. After about 4 years of playing, I started acquiring better gear, and from then on, I just added to the collection (with the exception of a few things I had to sell for financial reasons). Everything that I had to sell when I was younger, I've reacquired. I am always looking for something new to add to what I already have, but if I were forced to stop buying any more gear, I'd be happy with what I already have for the rest of my life. I've never been on a quest for tone. I sound the same with whatever I play thru. I just like having options!

wow Arjay that was kinda mean spirited there buddy.

I didn't say i sounded anything like SRV nor would i want to, Just saying that chasing tone is a lot of fun and it wont break the bank if your smart about it.

No need for crude expressions.

be nice and play nice with others.

I would usually just smile and pass by such a rude comment, but wow I thought you were a mature individual here to help others in their quest for tone, not a Jerk, whats up ???
