Well, the SRRI aint it, my old Music Man HD130's are close, a TRRI wasn't it...I could go on and on. I had a Hot Rod Deluxe, It wasn't even in the ballpark. Peavey C50 410's weren't it. I could list all the amps I've owned(would be a long list)...years ago in Nashville I played a Nocaster into a Vibroking, I was rather young and didn't really know much about high end amps. I remember it was blonde with 3-10's. best straight amp tone I've ever heard. This was in the early 90's, around 93 or 94....I just cant seem to find an amp I love. It always seems the bass is muffled and woofy, the mids are ragged and the highs are thin, buzzy, shrill and irritating at best.

Hi randini,

Sounds like you may only be happy with another Vibro-King. :D

Quite possibly so.....too rich for my blood now though. Maybe I'm just not using the right speakers? I've been playing for over 25 years and still looking. My ideal tone would be bass that is clean, deep and clear(like a piano note) mids that are creamy but lively and a high end that is smooth but still retains clarity. Any suggestions?

I'll probably put the Super and some other stuff up for sale and bite the bullet for a VK

If you are going to stay with Fender I believe you're going to have to spend some money and get one of the CS RI's. Maybe a new Vibroking or one of the 57 Tweeds. I have a 57 Twin Tweed RI that I love. JMHO

I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for a used 90's blonde VK....I just checked out some vids on youtube of the black VK, I dont remember the blonde having that much distortion. I dont know why amp companies always take a good idea and absolutely destroy it catering to the heavy metal distortion crowd. I've never tried a Tweed Twin although I have a 50 watt Marshall clone that I like. Maybe I should give one of the '59 tweed Bassman LTD's a shot. I've been running the clone and an old Music Man HD130 head into an old Bandmaster cab loaded with old EV/SRO 12L's. Sometimes with the Super I use another old Music Man HD130 4-10 combo. Maybe I'm just crazy, I might be looking for something that doesn't exist.

You're kinda describing the tone I'm after... I love the tone of the DRRI, but it had some issues, once I turned it up bass got all farty or boomy. After some great advice from Arjay I ended up with a 1x15 cab for my DRRI. I believe a combination of the right speaker and the right tubes (and bias) you can achieve the tone you're looking for. It took a while but I've been extremely happy with the results!

Here's a few samples I did while comparing speakers, it could be what you're after or maybe it's not for you...

Clean DRRI

Tube Screamer middle pickup

Tube Screamer neck pickup

Tube Screamer Bridge pickup

Might be a good idea to listen to them through your stereo system or a good set of headphones instead of cheap computer speakers ;)

I echo randini's quest for tone. Why should it be so hard to have good fidelity? I am with you on that low e string piano tone. Most likely a speaker change will be provide the most notable tone change. Good luck

One option is: with many amp kit manufacturers producing high quality amps for less than ½ the price of the originals and often with better components than the originals. Perhaps it’s time to investigate making one or having one built to your specs. If you go this route the amp will last a long time and can be modded when you feel the need for a different sound.

I actually had CJ Sutton from Weber build me the 6m45p amp with just a few upgrades. That amp is uncanny good. Side by side with a Marshall 1987x, it beats Marshall at their own game. I've been toying with the idea of putting the chassis in one of their bluesbreaker cabs with a blue dog and a silver bell.
