Hey there. I have a couple of questions w/ my HR Deville if someone can help out.

1) As I understand the suggested bias setting is 60 when using the GT6L6 power tubes.
I am replacing these w/ 6V6 tubes since I use the amp for harmonica.
Can somebody tell me if the bias setting I want will still be 60?

2) As long as we're talking tubes... Can someone explain the three pre-amp tubes?
Do they work in conjunction w/ each other? independently? Can you use different
pre=amp tubes in different positions to experiment? Thanks
Mark

Hi mark1960,

Actually 60 mV is not a setting for every tube, and the mV must be adjusted according to which tubes that you install. The test point reading is divided by the two output tubes. The schematic shows about 485 volts for the Plate, at 60 mV at the test point that would be approx 25 mA Plate current per tube, which would be about 12 watts idle dissipation, which is about 50% for the 5881 tubes. So a good setting for the 5881 tubes would be between 60 to 80 mV at the test point (50% to 70%), at 485 volts on the plate. Your actual measurements may be different, you must check your Plate voltage.

If you use 6V6 in place of the 6L6/5881, make sure that the rated Plate voltage of your 6v6 tube is 500 volts, to be able to handle the high supply volts in the amp. Since the 6V6 is a lower wattage tube than the 6L6, the mV reading at the test point should be between 40 and 50 mV for 50% to 70% idle dissipation. You might want to set the bias adjust as low as it will go with the existing tubes before installing your new tubes.

V1 is the first preamp tube and will have the most affect on tone. Half of V2 is the tone stack recovery and will have some affect on tone but not as much as V1. The other half of V2 is only for the drive channel, so V2 will affect the tone of the drive channel more than it will affect the tone of the clean channel. V3 is a phase inverter and will have little affect on tone. You can experiment with different preamp tubes in any position that you want, mix and match to your desired sound. :)

Thanks joncarr1979... Very helpful. I once knew most of this stuff but 10 years away from playing and, well I'd be lucky to remember how to set up a P.A.
You people are very helpful
Thanks
Mark :D

A thanks to Shimmilou and Joncarr!!!
I finally recieved my new tubes today and had promised to let y'all know the results.
A quick reminder it's a Hot Rod Deville/410. I went w/ the JJ6v6s power tubes and the gt12ax7's in v1 and v2. I put a JJecc82 in v3. This combination is great for the tone and headroom I wanted. Nice fat bottom end also. Now remember, I'm playing harp, not guitar with this setup. I also want to thank you nice folks for answering my questions period. Too many people who did'nt answer me told me the HD Deville was the wrong amp for harmonica. Now how do they know what style or sound I have honed through the years??? <<<<Hahah :D . And everyone warned me against using the 6V6's in a Deville. I guess it's easy to assume playing a harp & mic (v.s.) a guitar through a Deville doesn't change the tone much. Not only am I grateful to have found the "Fender" forum, but have E-mailed the link to several friends.
You Guys Rock!!!
Love God

Eurotubes has a great video on their site on how to bias a Deluxe/Deville.
